Virat Kohli hinted at Rohit Sharma becoming India‘s next T20I captain while speaking at the toss on Monday against Namibia in Dubai as he leads the T20 unit one last time. India have already been eliminated from the semi-final race.

While Rahul Dravid has been announced the next coach replacing the outgoing Ravi Shastri, whose contract comes to an end, the BCCI haven’t yet announced the next T20I skipper.

Rohit Sharma is the likeliest candidate to replace Virat Kohli as not only he is the current vice-captain but also has led Mumbai Indians to five IPL titles – the most in the tournament’s history.

On Monday, Virat Kohli was asked about his last game as India’s T20I captain. The 33-year-old highlighted that the T20I captaincy makes way for him to put more attention to other formats.

While mentioning that the next generation players will take over Indian cricket, he hinted that Rohit Sharma is still here and will be “overlooking things for a while now”.

“It’s been an honour for me. I was given the opportunity and I’ve tried to do my best. As I’ve said before, its also time for me to create some space and prioritize moving forward. Unfortunately, the shortest format of the way has to give way to the longer formats. I’ve been immensely proud of the team and thankful for the opportunity to lead the format for so many years. Now, its time for the next lot to take this team forward. Rohit is here obviously. He is overlooking things for a while now and we’ll always be the leaders in the dressing room,” Virat Kohli said at the toss.

Virat Kohli, who won the toss and elected to bowl first, announced one change in India’s eleven which defeated Scotland: leg-spinner Rahul Chahar get his first match of the tournament, replacing Varun Chakravarthy.
