England‘s Chris Woakes was on fire with the ball in the powerplay versus Australia on Saturday in Dubai. But, his incredible one-handed catch to get rid of Steve Smith has got everyone talking about it.
On the first ball of the third over of Australia’s innings, Steve Smith mistimed a pull shot to a short, widish, away swinging delivery from Chris Jordan towards mid-on. Chris Woakes was positioned well inside the ring and had to quickly back-pedal while also keeping his eyes on the ball.
Realizing that the ball may go over his head, Chris Woakes stretched out his right hand and managed to grab the ball; he didn’t let it go while falling on the ground completing a terrific catch. The England players surrounded him in celebration and their faces told how impressed and amazed they were by this worldie from Chris Woakes.
Australia manage 125 after being blown away in the powerplay
After being put in to bat first, Australia were blown away by the England bowlers. In the second over, Chris Woakes had David Warner edging to Jos Buttler; in the third, Woakes took a brilliant one-handed catch at mid-on of Steve Smith who mistimed a pull off Chris Jordan.
Next over, Woakes struck again, trapping Glenn Maxwell lbw. Australia finished the powerplay at 21/3, having scored just a solitary boundary. Adil Rashid then had Marcus Stoinis, hitting the batsman in front of the stumps with a googly.
Matthew Wade and Aaron Finch forged a 30-run stand from 33 balls to stop the wicket flow, but the left-hander holed out at long-on while trying to up the ante against Liam Livingstone.
The Aussie skipper, though, held his end tightly, stroking a couple of fours to Tymal Mills.
Ashton Agar hammered a couple of sixes in the 17th over to Woakes before getting out to Mills, who was also slammed for two maximums by Pat Cummins.
Jordan, however, had both Finch and Cummins in the 19th. Starc’s 6-ball 13 towards the end helped Australia to 125.
