The 23rd match of the ICC T20 World Cup sees Bangladesh take on West Indies on Friday at Sharjah Cricket Stadium. Bangladesh currently find themselves at number five on the Group 1 points table. They have lost both the games played thus far in the Super 12 stage.
The batting unit hasn’t fired in unison and that has been the major reason behind the downfall. M Naim has looked in great touch. He set the foundation with a solid knock at the top of the order against Sri Lanka.
However, he couldn’t replicate a similar performance in the last game against England. Liton Das’ form is also a major concern for the side. There is no denying that Bangladesh is missing Tamim Iqbal at the top of the order.
Their best bet, Shakib Al Hasan made only 4 runs in the last game, while Mushfiqur Rahim (29 off 30) and Mahmudullah (19 off 24) failed to convert the starts into big scores. As a result, Bangladesh posted just 124 runs in the first innings. Jason Roy’s outstanding 61-run knock off 38 balls in the second innings meant England chased down the score pretty easily in 14.1 overs.
Another defeat on Friday could end Bangladesh’s hopes of reaching the semis. It will be interesting to see what kind of approach would they play against West Indies on Friday.
West Indies, on the other hand, too have exhibited disappointing performances. The defending champions failed to live up to the expectations and it doesn’t look like they will reach the semis this year. Though, you can’t really be a hundred per cent sure about that as this team certainly have it in them to turn the fortunes around in just a couple of games.
West Indies have played two games and have lost both of them. Collective failure from the batting unit has been the root cause of their failure. Evin Lewis is the only batsman who has scored a half-century in the tournament. He scored 56 runs off 35 balls in the last game against South Africa, however, his partner Lendl Simmons used up 35 balls for just 16 runs.
He played perhaps the worst innings of his T20 career. Andre Fletcher is likely to replace him in the next game. The likes of Nicholas Pooran (12 off 7), Chris Gayle (12 off 12) and Kieron Pollard (26 off 20) failed to convert the starts into big scores. West Indies, as a result, only managed to score 143 runs in the first innings.
There is no denying that their bowling unit too has lacked steam. None of them has looked threatening in the tournament. Given their mediocre bowling attack, West Indies’ batting unit needs to fire on Friday.
