3 Reasons Why Deepak Chahar Was Not Selected In India Squad For T20 World Cup 2022
1. Long Absence Due to Injury
During the West Indies tour of India 2022 in February this year, Deepak Chahar suffered a hand injury while fielding due to which he was ruled out of the tournament. The medium-pacer was expected to make a comeback in the IPL 2022 in April, however, he could not get fit in time.
He made a comeback in the IND vs ZIM ODI series last month. Due to his injury, Chahar missed some crucial T20I series against West Indies (July-Aug 2022), Ireland (June 2022), England (June 2022), and South Africa (June 2022). This year, he has only played 4 T20I games. His absence from the field this year has been one of the top reasons for his ouster from T20 World Cup 2022 squad.
2. Inclusion of Arshdeep Singh
Deepak Chahar’s absence came out as a big opportunity for some emerging young pacers like Arshdeep Singh, Avesh Khan, and Umran Malik. All these pacers were given opportunities to make their debut this year. While Umran Malik and Avesh Khan could not impress to a great extent, Arshdeep Singh came out as an outstanding performer.
The left-arm pacer has played 11 T20Is so far, in which he has picked 14 wickets at an average of 20.14. His economy of 7.39 is quite better than Chahar, who holds an economy of 8.20 in the shortest format. Recently in Asia Cup 2022, Arshdeep Singh impressed with his few economical overs in the death. Moreover, being a left-armer, Arshdeep Singh gives more variation in the pace department.
3. Less Experience In 4-Year Long Career
Deepak Chahar made his debut in July 2018 against England. However, in the span of the last 4 years, Chahar has only played 21 T20I games so far. Injuries have taken a big toll on his career too, as he has been out of the field due to injuries multiple times.
Hence, even though he made his international debut 4 years ago, he has played very less games. He has been in and out of the team over the last 4 years. Hence, this might be another reason why Chahar was not picked in the final 15 for ICC T20 World Cup 2022.
