Dilip Vengsarkar, a former captain of India and national selector, believes that the three players could have made significant contributions to the team that heads to Australia for the T20 World Cup later this year.
India’s T20 World Cup lineup, which was disclosed by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Monday, is still up for discussion.
The majority of the players were from the recently-concluded Asia Cup, where India was eliminated in the Super 4 after suffering back-to-back losses to eventual champions Sri Lanka and Pakistan.
Given how the competition played out, it was anticipated that there might be a few changes to the team, but the Indian squad that was announced on Monday hardly underwent any.
India should have included fast bowler Mohammed Shami: Dilip Vengsarkar
Dilip Vengsarkar, a former captain of India and current chairman of the national selection committee, has stated that the team should have included opening batsman Shubman Gill as well as fast bowlers; Mohammed Shami and Umran Malik.
“For the T20 World Cup, I would have chosen Mohammed Shami, Umran Malik, and Shubman Gill. They all had a fantastic IPL season, therefore I would have given them a long run in T20Is,” Dilip Vengsarkar told The Indian Express.
“I can not really say who hits at what number.” It is up to the think tank, the coach, the captain, and the vice-captain to make the decision. However, I believe Suryakumar Yadav, who is batting at 4, can also bat at 5. He has the potential to be a terrific finisher,” Dilip Vengsarkar remarked.
India’s T20 World Cup squad: Rohit Sharma (captain), KL Rahul (vice-captain), Virat Kohli, Suryakumar Yadav, Deepak Hooda, Rishabh Pant (wicket-keeper), Dinesh Karthik (wicket-keeper), Hardik Pandya, Ravichandran Ashwin, Yuzvendra Chahal, Axar Patel, Jasprit Bumrah, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Harshal Patel, and Arshdeep Singh.
