The 37-year-old wicketkeeper-batter Dinesh Karthik has suffered a back injury and he is reportedly doubtful for India’s upcoming ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022 match against Shakib Al Hasan-led Bangladesh National Cricket Team.
The veteran wicket-keeper sustained the back injury during the 30th match of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022, which was played between Temba Bavuma-led South Africa National Cricket Team and Rohit Sharma-led India National Cricket Team at the Optus Stadium in Perth on Sunday, October 30.

India won the toss and opted to bat first against South Africa. The Indian batters, except Suryakumar Yadav, struggled against the Proteas’ pace attack on the bouncy surface and they were able to post 133 for 9 on the board. Dinesh Karthik failed miserably as he faced 15 balls in the match and scored just 6 runs.
Defending the target, the young left-arm pacer Arshdeep Singh cleaned up Quinton de Kock and Rilee Rossouw in his first over of the match. Also, Temba Bavuma was cleaned up by Mohammed Shami in the 6th over.
However, middle-order batters David Miller and Aiden Markram smashed brilliant half-centuries to guide the Proteas to victory.
I know he had some back issue – Bhuvneshwar Kumar on Dinesh Karthik
At the end of the 15th over of the South Africa innings, the veteran wicketkeeper-batter Dinesh Karthik was seen writhing in pain as he clutched his back and was on his knees.
The physio immediately came out to check on the veteran player and after a few minutes, Karthik was seen walking off the field while holding his back. The substitute wicket-keeper Rishabh Pant walked out to the middle after Karthik walked off and he kept the wickets for the last 5 overs.
Meanwhile, the veteran pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar, during the post-match press conference, revealed that Karthik has indeed sustained a back injury.
“I know he had some back issue. Obviously, the physio will give a report and we will have more clarity after that,” Bhuvneshwar said during the post-match media conference.
The exact nature of his injury is not known, but the PTI has reported that Karthik is a doubtful starter for the match against Bangladesh.
The 35th match of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022 will be played between India and Bangladesh at the Adelaide Oval on Wednesday, November 2.
