ICC T20 World Cup 2022: India To Leave For The World Cup Without Their 15th Player

The Indian team will depart for the T20 World Cup in Australia in less than 24 hours with roughly 18 players on board but without the squad’s official 15th player.
The selection of a substitute for Jasprit Bumrah, who was just excluded from the competition, will be delayed by the national selectors and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).

The predicament resulted from questions surrounding Mohammed Shami’s fitness as Bumrah’s replacement. According to information obtained by Cricbuzz, the BCCI, the selectors, and the team management have chosen to monitor the experienced pacer’s recovery from a case of the Covid-19 virus.

Shami has recently displayed improved fitness in the nets, but all parties involved want to be certain that he will be ready for the tournament from October 16 to November 13. The pacer is currently required to go to Bengaluru’s National Cricket Academy (NCA).
India’s first game in the World Cup is against Pakistan:
It goes without saying that the NCA’s medical staff will evaluate his fitness and communicate its findings to the BCCI before a decision is taken. The BCCI will reportedly hold off until October 15 to make the full squad announcement required by ICC regulations. Shami will later travel to Australia with the Indian team if he is deemed healthy. On October 23 at the MCG, India will play its opening World Cup match against Pakistan.

If Shami unexpectedly fails to reach the necessary levels of fitness, Mohammed Siraj and Deepak Chahar will step in. The three ODI matches against the visiting South Africa side over the next seven days will provide the selectors the opportunity to observe both of them before picking one of them.
In the Shikhar Dhawan-led 16-person team, Siraj and Chahar, who both participated in the three-match T20 series, have been picked. The selectors would have preferred Shami to play in the ODIs as well, but due to his Covid problem, that did not happen.
