David Warner was stripped of Australia’s ODI captaincy due to his involvement in the ‘Sandpapergate affair’ in South Africa in March 2018. However, some of the game’s most ardent supporters, who wanted the opener banned for life, are now cheering for the 35-year-old to lead Australia in the white-ball format.
On Tuesday, Australia’s Test captain Pat Cummins was named ODI captain to replace Aaron Finch, taking the role ahead of experienced opener David Warner. Cricket Australia recently said that it was revisiting Warner’s ban as a leader due to his good influence on the squad.
David Warner’s Leadership Within The Group Is Fantastic: George Bailey
While speaking to the media, Australia’s selection head, George Bailey, said, ‘he can’t speak highly enough of Warner’s leadership.’
“What I do hope is that it happens in a really timely manner,” Bailey said of CA’s code of conduct review. “The longer that drags out just leads to (more) speculation. I don’t think that’s helpful for David.
“David’s leadership within the group is fantastic, titled or not. It’s highly respected.
“I think it’s a credit to David that a number of people externally who are now saying it’s a no-brainer that he should hold a leadership position were, 18 months, two years ago, some of the strongest advocates for him having a life ban.
“It’s a credit to David that he has worked on himself.
“Internally, I can’t speak highly enough of what he brings to the group – as do a number of players.

Pat Cummins Selected As New Australian ODI Skipper
Pat Cummins, Australia’s newly chosen captain, is likely to lead the team into the 50-over World Cup in India late next year.
Cummins, Australia’s 27th men’s ODI captain, will be the first fast bowler to lead a men’s squad in white-ball cricket, and the first bowler to step in for 11 ODIs since the late Shane Warne in the late 1990s.
No vice-captain has been nominated, but Cummins stated on Sunday that if he is appointed, he expects to rely heavily on others to lead key series.
