With just less than six months left in the ICC T20 World Cup 2024, the Indian cricket team selectors have started to finalize the final 15 of their squad. With more than 2 to 3 players fighting for one place, Ishan Kishan is one such name, whose future in the Indian team is in huge darkness. Kishan, who was part of India’s white-ball squad for the tour of South Africa, has not played a single match since returning home.
Ishan Kishan was part of the Test team against South Africa but pulled out from the series due to personal reasons. Kishan also missed the T20I series against Afghanistan and the first two Tests against England due to the same issue. While there were speculations that Indian selectors have started to look beyond Ishan Kishan India‘s head coach Rahul Dravid had clarified that Kishan demanded a break and was unavailable for selection.
Ishan Kishan reported to be out of contention from the T20 World Cup 2024 squad
Ishan Kishan has also not represented Jharkhand in the ongoing edition of the Ranji Trophy. The JSCA also doesn’t know about his return plans. The Indian cricket team selectors are also unlikely to consider Ishan Kishan from the rest three Test matches of the series against England.
As per a report by the Telegraph India, the Jharkhand State Cricket Association doesn’t even know about Ishan Kishan’s plans or whether will he make himself available for the rest of the season or not. The BCCI is also in the dark about Ishan Kishan’s return to the field and he is not expected to come back before IPL 2024. India will not have any white ball matches until June 2024.
The report adds that the Indian selection committee led by Ajit Agarkar is also not pleased with Ishan Kishan’s absence from the field. With the likes of Sanju Samson and Jitesh Sharma also in the queue to get selected in the T20 World Cup squad, Kishan is expected to get neglected, whereas Samson and Sharma can be given preference.
However, there have also been several reports that Ishan Kishan is dealing with mental fatigue and his matter shall be dealt with carefully. As per the report, someone who knows about Ishan Kishan’s matter stated, “This is a very delicate situation. He perhaps needs a long break. Support him and allow him the freedom to deal with such circumstances,” as quoted by Telegraph India.
Ishan Kishan has been part of the Indian cricket team for a long time and slammed a double hundred against Bangladesh in the third ODI in December 2022. Kishan showcased his talent on the world stage and helped India win matches on his own. Kishan received an India call-up for the ODI World Cup 2023, however, he only played one match which was against Australia, the team’s opening match of the tournament.
The Indian team has not won an ICC title in the past 10 years and will want to end their drought in the T20 World Cup 2024. India lost the semi-final of the 2022 T20 World Cup against England by ten wickets.
