Sri Lanka’s first innings total of 531 against Bangladesh in the second Test in Chattogram has put the team into an elite list. The Lankans won the first Test by 328 runs and started the second Test strongly.
They have now posted the highest total in a Test innings without any of their batters scoring a century. Six of their batters scored fifty-plus scores with Kusal Mendis top-scoring with 93.
Nishan Madushka scored 57, Dimuth Karunaratne 86, Mendis 93, skipper Dhananyaja de Silva 70, and Kamindu Mendis an unbeaten 92. The other batters came up with crucial contributions as well and it was a team effort that helped Sri Lanka pile up a mammoth score.
Three of Bangladesh’s mainstream spinners gave over a hundred runs. Shakib Al Hasan (110), Mehidy Hasan Miraz (146) an Taijul Islam (106). Bangladesh who lost the first Test will now be under pressure to challenge Sri Lanka’s score.
Bangladesh have a poor record in Test matches over the years against Sri Lanka. They have won just one out of the 26 Test matches. The Lankans, on the other hand, have won 19 Test matches. The first Test win gave Sri Lanka their first points in this edition of the WTC. The win helped them move up to the sixth position on the table with a PCT of 33.33. Bangladesh are placed just below Sri Lanka with the same PCT points.

Meanwhile, Shakib Al Hasan is playing the second Test after skipping the first. The mood in the Bangladesh camp has been very positive since he joined the team, said Bangladesh interim head coach Nick Pothas who also added that current skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto will benefit a lot from the presence of the former captain who can provide his inputs.
“I think any team that has Shakib in it is very fortunate. We welcome him back. It is always great to have him in the change room. His energy is very infectious. He has a lot of experience for the guys to learn from and whenever Shakib is back, he’s a giver. So we really enjoy having him around the group,” Pothas told reporters ahead of the second Test in Chattogram.
“It looks like he (Shakib) has lost weight. So he’s been training. He has had a good BPL. He’s had a good start to the Dhaka Premier League. He’s happy and that’s the only place we want Shakib. We want him happy. So, he looks great,” said Pothasmon Shakib staying away from the game for a length of time.
The Bangladesh interim coach backed the players to make a comeback in the second Test after they lost the first Test by 328 runs on home soil.
“These are very good young players, but they are young and they’re playing against an experienced team and it will take time to learn lessons. We wouldn’t expect any different from our children when we put them into new environments. We don’t expect our kids to suddenly be experts. That’s why they go to school. So they’re a fantastic group and let’s judge them in two years’ time rather than now,” he said before the second Test started.
