ICC World Test Championship Records & Stats
The ICC World Test Championship (ICC WTC) is the premier competition of the Test format. Organized by the International Cricket Council, it is a biennial event and is played over two years.
The first edition of the WTC was played in 2019 to 2021 while the second edition was played from 2021 to 2023. The third edition was played from 2023 to 2025. According to the existing rules, the top nine teams in the ICC Test rankings participate in the ICC WTC.
In all the three editions so far, the same nine teams - India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, West Indies, South Africa, New Zealand, Australia and England - have participated. On the other hand, Zimbabwe, Ireland and Afghanistan are yet to play in the championship despite having Test status.
Each team plays six series - three away and three home - during the two-year cycle. A team gets 12 points for a win, six points for a tie and four points for a draw. The teams are ranked on the basis of the percentage of points earned. At the end of the two-year cycle, the top two teams in the points table qualify for the final.
The inaugural edition of the WTC was played from 2019 to 2021. India and New Zealand qualified for the final before the latter won the title-decider to become the first-ever WTC champions. In the second edition that was played from 2021 to 2023, Australia beat India in the final. In the third edition, South Africa and Australia qualified for the final.
