Ravichandran Ashwin has more than just a chance to make it to the Indian ODI World Cup squad for the tournament to be played at home later next month.
An untimely injury to Axar Patel has opened up the door for Ashwin and he has a chance in the Australia series to prove his credentials. Axar was struggling with a hamstring injury heading into the game against Bangladesh. He coped a few blows on his left wrist in the game and was ruled out of the Australia series.
That allowed the selectors to recall Ravichandran Ashwin back into the ODI squad. He last played an ODI against South Africa in January 2022. Despite of being out of white-ball cricket for over a year, the management backed Ashwin’s experience as they added him to the squad for the Australia series.
Ahead of the first ODI against Australia, Ashwin spoke to BCCI about his return back into the ODI squad and his vision towards the ICC World Cup 2023.

Speaking to BCCI Ashwin said ” You start playing play the game when people talk about your numbers and achievements and you feel I achieved something. I am not a man of tattoos but the tattoo is well inside my heart” said Ashwin.
Speaking about the possibility of his inclusion in the World Cup squad, Ravichandran Ashwin said ” If they want to bring something different to the table, something different from my perspective. The team management has kept me in the loop whenever they said there could be a chance. If at all I get a chance to play and make a zone of contribution for the team, I would be more than happy to do that”.
For the first ODI, there are reports that only one between Ashwin and Washington Sundar might play in the XO. Former cricketers are backing Ashwin’s experience and hence want him to see in the XI.
India will play their first ODI game against Australia in Mohali on Friday, 22 September. The other two ODIs will be played in Indore (September 24, Sunday) and Rajkot (September 27, Wednesday).
