Shreyas Iyer was run out for just three in the first ODI against Australia in Mohali. He was making a comeback into the Indian team after recovering from his back spasm and missed the opportunity to score big.

He was run out in a mix-up with Shubman Gill. The call, however, was from Iyer himself and was a poor one in the end. There was high anticipation in regards to Iyer’s comeback from his knock ended in an anti-climax.

The Men in Blue however, won the first ODI by five wickets after Shubman Gill (74) and Ruturaj Gaikwad (71) added a 142-run opening stand. Suryakumar Kumat scored his third ODI fifty (50 off 49) and along with KL Rahul (58*) took India over the line in Mohali. This was India’s first win in ODI win in Mohali since 1996.

Meanwhile, speaking to Jio Cinema after the match Abhishek Nayar said that Shreyas Iyer is expected to come back from this as he will understand his mistake and work on it.

“He’s a professional cricketer and being part of the IPL setup for a long time and this Indian team for a couple of years now, he understands that you made a mistake and the communication wasn’t great. It maybe wasn’t the right time to pick that single. India were in a comfortable position. But you expect Shreyas Iyer to come back from this,” said Nayar.

Shreyas Iyer Needs To Find That One Innings: Abhishek Nayar

He further said that it is just playing that one good knock from Iyer and he will be back in form. The batter missed a majority of international cricket leading into the World Cup. However, he is now part of the Indian squad for the World Cup and is expected to play an important role in the middle order.

“He has come back before as well and I am sure he is going to be in a relaxed space because of the environment in this Indian team is where they are backing players. He knows he has done well over a period of time. A game or two is not going to define Shreyas Iyer. It’s just about him finding that one inning. Iyer has done it for India in this format,” Nayar added.

Iyer has scored 1648 runs in 45 matches for India in ODIs while averaging 44.54. He was India’s top-scorer in 2022 scoring 724 runs in 17 matches at an average of 55.69 with one century and six fifties.
