India won the Test series against England taking an unassailable lead of 3-1 in the five-match series. Rohit Sharma and company defeated the Ben Stokes-led England side in the fourth Test which was played at the Jharkhand State Cricket Association Stadium in Ranchi by five wickets. However, Rohit Sharma made a good point in the post-match press conference about giving preferences to those players who have a hunger for success, and former India all-rounder Irfan Pathan has praised Rohit’s statement.

The point was about players who are not playing domestic cricket even after being asked by the BCCI to do so. Rohit Sharma made it clear that those players who are not hungry and do not want to stay here will not be played in any game and preference will always be given to players who want to play in tough conditions and have a hunger to prove their worth in any conditions.

“It becomes apparent who is not hungry and who does not want to stay here. Those who are hungry, and who want to play in tough conditions, will be given preference. It is very simple,” said Rohit Sharma in the post-match. This was an indirect dig at players like Ishan Kishan and Shreyas Iyer as they both skipped Ranji Trophy matches even after being asked by the BCCI to play the games for their respective domestic teams.

Former India all-rounder Irfan Pathan backed Rohit Sharma’s statement saying that it is a timely reminder that hunger for success sets players apart and it is really important for Indian cricket. He tweeted, “Rohit Sharma’s recent remarks on the importance of hunger and determination among young cricketers are a timely reminder that the hunger for success sets players apart. Really important for Indian cricket.”

Rohit Sharma was brilliant with his captaincy in the Test series and also contributed well with the bat. He scored a brilliant century in the first innings of the third Test in Rajkot and also smashed a half-century in the second innings of the fourth Test while chasing 192 in Ranchi. India won their 17th consecutive Test series at home and has been undefeated at home in Tests since 2012.

This was the first defeat for Ben Stokes in a Test series as a captain and it has come against a rather inexperienced Indian side. The likes of Dhruv Jurel, Sarfaraz Khan, and Yashasvi Jaiswal all have impressed in this series with Dhruv Jurel winning the Player of the Match for his performance in the fourth Test and Yashasvi Jaiswal becoming the leading scorer in this five-match Test series. India and England will face each other in the final and fifth Test of the series at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium in Dharamsala.
