India pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah, on Saturday (February 17), gave the team a flying start with the ball by dismissing Joe Root early on day three of the third Test between India and England in Rajkot.

India had their task cut out with the ball on day three after England’s solid display with the bat on the previous day. Replying to the hosts’ big first innings total of 445 runs, England smashed 207/2 in just 35 overs on day two. Ben Duckett was the star with the bat for England as he smashed an unbeaten 133 runs off just 118 balls.

He and Joe Root started the proceedings with the bat on day three. Even before the start of the day’s play, India suffered a huge blow as their spin spearhead Ravichandran Ashwin withdrew from the Test due to a family medical emergency. In Ashwin’s absence, the onus was on Bumrah to lead the attack once again and the fast bowler did not disappoint.

England could add only 17 runs to the overnight score before Bumrah dismissed Joe Root to give India a crucial breakthrough. The former England skipper went for the reverse-lap but failed to make good contact with the ball. He could only edge it toward Yashasvi Jaiswal at second slip and the India opener came up with a fine juggling effort to catch the ball.

Meanwhile, the latest dismissal has further extended Bumrah’s domination over Joe Root in Tests. The India star has now dismissed the England batsman 9 times in 21 innings. In the ongoing series, Bumrah has dismissed Joe Root thrice already in 5 innings so far.

Talking about the Test, England were on 226 for 4 at the time of writing this report. After Joe Root’s departure, Kuldeep Yadav dismissed Jonny Bairstow for a duck to put India on top.
