Harsha Bhogle and Dinesh Karthik have heaped praise on Yashasvi Jaiswal after his stunning century against England in the ongoing second IND vs ENG Test in Hyderabad. The India opener stood firm at one end and led the team’s charge with the bat as his experienced teammates failed to deliver. Not a single batsman could score fifty on the opening day of the Test as Yashasvi Jaiswal rescued the hosts. At stumps, India were on 336 for 6 with the opener scoring 179 of those runs. He smashed 17 fours and 5 sixes in his knock.
The Mumbai star mixed caution with aggression throughout his knock. He was at ease defending the balls when English bowlers were bowling well and was quick to shift gears whenever any loose ball came his way. The 22-year-old reached his maiden Test century at home in style by smashing a six over long-on. And while it is not his first century in Tests, Bhogle believes the knock has marked his arrival at the international stage.
“I’ve seen this young man for a while now. We saw him at Rajasthan Royals and he looked good. He started scoring hundreds for Mumbai. So you thought he’s not just a white ball slammer. Then he went and got 170. On test debut, he got 86.
“He played with freedom. This, I think is the innings that will tell us. Even though it’s on a good batting surface because of the temperament that he showed. This is the innings that will tell us that Yashasvi Jaiswal is here,” Bhogle told Cricbuzz.
“Look at what the scorecard without Yashasvi Jaiswal. This 20s. There’s 30s. And these are experienced players. None of them went on and got a big score. He got to his hundred with a six in the second last one of the day. We thought, is he tiring? He’s getting his hands massaged. He hits a six,” he added.
Dinesh Karthik praises Yashasvi Jaiswal:
Dinesh Karthik was also all praise for Yashasvi Jaiswal. The veteran wicketkeeper-batsman, who is plying his trade as a commentator in the ongoing series, said that he liked the opener’s hunger and determination. Karthik made it clear that he was impressed with Jaiswal’s attitude and saw him outplay his illustrious teammates.
“What I liked about it was the hunger and determination. He had a lot of players with a lot more experience playing with him today. But he chose to be the guy to stay from the start to the end,” said Karthik.
“Played with a great tempo, played some good looking shots. And that is always going to be the case with Yashasvi Jaiswal. There is no doubt about it. He’s someone who will always be very good-looking with the shots. He plays technically very sound as well. Good of the short ball for fast bowlers, and spinners. No doubt a very good player,” he added.
Meanwhile, Jaiswal completed his double century on day two. It is his first double century in Tests. At the time of writing this report, he was unbeaten on 209 off 288 balls while India was on 383 for 7. Kuldeep Yadav was unbeaten on 1 at the other end.
England are currently leading the five-match series after winning the first Test in Hyderabad. The visitors stunned Team India by 28 runs to go 1-0 in the series.
