Former India pace spearhead Zaheer Khan has praised Yashasvi Jaiswal as the youngster continued his impressive start in international cricket on Thursday (July 20).
After impressing in the domestic circuit and in the Indian Premier League, Yashasvi Jaiswal was finally given the chance to make his debut in international cricket in the ongoing Test series against West Indies and he has grabbed the opportunity with both hands.
With Shubman Gill willingly taking the number three spot in the batting lineup, Yashasvi Jaiswal was given the chance to open the innings with skipper Rohit Sharma and he has hit the ground running in international cricket. He made his debut during the first Test against West Indies and smashed 171 runs to walk away with the Man of the Match award.
The southpaw scored 171 runs while sharing a 229-run stand with Rohit as India crushed the hosts by an innings and 141 runs. In the ongoing second Test too, Yashasvi Jaiswal has given India a good start. Although he could not score a century, he scored 57 and shared yet another hundred-plus stand with Rohit. The duo added 139 runs for the first wicket before Jaiswal departed for 57.
Zaheer Khan praises Yashasvi Jaiswal:
With Yashasvi Jaiswal impressing in the second Test too, Zaheer Khan praised the youngster for not getting carried away after his stunning debut. The legendary pacer also praised the newcomer for not losing his focus when he was hardly getting the strike during the first session.
“It’s just the second innings in his Test career. Very consistent, you have to say. It’s also important to note that he has started from scratch. When you start your next innings after your debut hundred, it’s important you don’t get carried away by what you have done in your previous innings,” Zaheer told Jio Cinema.
“Rohit was getting a lot more strike than Yashasvi. At times, you feel that lack of touch as well say the other batter is batting at 60 and you are at 30, that kind of sometimes gets you in that zone where you feel ‘oh I am going really slow and you sometimes try to up the ante and you can make an error’.
“Yashasvi has not done that. It’s very important to stick to your routines, stick to your tempo. Both these players have batted at a very good run rate. Yashasvi has been showing really good signs of being in that zone to score big runs,” Zaheer added.
Meanwhile, India finished day one on 288 for 4. After losing four wickets in quick time, India managed to recover thanks to an unbeaten 106-run stand between Virat Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja.
