Mohammed Shami Asked To Report At The NCA

Due to a hand injury, veteran fast bowler Mohammed Shami will not play in the ODI series against Bangladesh, which begins on Sunday, a BCCI source said on Saturday.

“Mohammed Shami has suffered a hand injury that he sustained after resuming training post T20 World Cup in Australia. He has been asked to report at the NCA and has not travelled with the team on December 1,” a senior BCCI source privy to development told PTI on conditions of anonymity.

Shami’s injury’s full extent is still unknown. Going into the World Cup next year, the 33-year-old Bengal quick is a crucial component of India’s ODI strategy.

Mohammed Shami’s Likely Absence For Test Series Bigger Worry

India needs to win every game in the Test series in order to remain in the running for the forthcoming World Test Championship final at the Oval in June, therefore captain Rohit Sharma and head coach Rahul Dravid would be concerned if Shami were to miss it.

“Shami’s absence from three ODI games is definitely a factor but bigger worry is his likely absence from Tests where he is supposed to spearhead the attack in Jasprit Bumrah’s absence,” said the source.

Along the other top players like Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and KL Rahul, Shami was already rested from the New Zealand tour. Shami participated in the T20 World Cup for Team India.

He was unable to deliver a standout performance in that event, though. Rohit, Kohli, and Rahul are among the veteran players who are rejoining the team after the ODI series against Bangladesh.

Four fast bowlers are already included in the current lineup for the ODI series against Bangladesh in addition to Shami. These people include Kuldeep Sen, Mohammad Siraj, Deepak Chahar, and Shardul Thakur.

In circumstances like this, BCCI hardly ever announces a successor. However, a fast bowler would undoubtedly have a chance to earn a spot in the team for the two-match series if Shami’s ailment worsens.
