On day 2 of the upcoming Test at Edgbaston, former Indian opener Wasim Jaffer was pleasantly delighted to witness India’s acting skipper Jasprit Bumrah smash Stuart Broad all over the park with the bat. Broad has the unfavourable record for the most expensive over bowled in Test history after giving up a record-breaking 35 runs in the over.

Bumrah continued to get short deliveries from the seasoned English bowler, but he was waiting on the back foot, ready to just release his arms and throw them over the boundary.

Wasim Jaffer Surprised By Jasprit Bumrah’s Knock

Speaking to ESPNCricinfo, Jaffer expressed his joy at witnessing Bumrah beat the illustrious record established by Brian Lara by scoring 29 runs with his bat in that over. In one over, the West Indies superstar plundered 28 runs against left-arm spinner Robin Peterson. He said:

“(On whether Bumrah’s batting was the biggest surprise of the Test) Yes, no one expected Bumrah to play this way, especially scoring 35 runs in an over. So yes he really surprised everyone by breaking the record of the legendary Brian Lara.”

Wasim Jaffer agrees with Ravindra Jadeja that his 104 on Day 2 was his greatest score in the game’s longest format. The all-rounder kept his innings moving along nicely, and he and Rishabh Pant created a crucial combination that helped India escape a hazardous scenario. He stated:

“(On whether this was Jadeja’s best Test knock) Yes, if you keep the conditions in mind and also the importance of this Test match then yes I definitely feel so.”

According to Jaffer, if India gets off to a strong start on Day 3, they would be in a strong position to win the match. He added:

“(On whether despite the rain, India will win the Test) Yes, if the first session on Day 3 goes India’s way, then I feel India can win the Test match.”

Ben Stokes, the team captain, and the dashing Jonny Bairstow are crucial to England’s chances of mounting a comeback. The hosts are now in trouble, trailing by 332 runs and at 84/5.
