Former England National Cricket Team captain Michael Vaughan has said that he is confident that the India National Cricket Team captain Rohit Sharma and head coach Rahul Dravid are not thinking about dropping Virat Kohli from India’s T20I playing XI. He added that Kohli can’t be picked in the playing XI on the basis of his past performances.

Virat Kohli, who failed to score good runs for India in the rescheduled Test against England, was able to score only 1 run in the second T20I against England at the Edgbaston, Birmingham before being dismissed by debutant Richard Gleeson.

Speaking to Cricbuzz after the second T20I, Vaughan said:

“He (Virat) needs to score runs at a good strike rate. I am sure Rahul Dravid and Rohit Sharma are not considering dropping him. But you can’t just keep picking a player because of what he has done in the past.”

Vaughan added that Kohli missing the upcoming five-match T20I series against the West Indies will be the best thing to happen to him as he will get a much-needed break. He said:

“I have been saying he needs a break as it will do him a world of good. So missing the five T20Is against West Indies will be best thing to happen to him. But if there was ever a ground where you could get a quick score with great strike rate, Trent Bridge is the ground to get your form back.”

Notably, some rumours have been circulating that Kohli, who has been rested for West Indies ODIs, may not be picked for the West Indies T20Is.

Former India left-arm pacer Zaheer Khan, who was also present on the Cricbuzz panel alongside Michael Vaughan, said that he would like to see India make changes to the playing XI in the third T20I and give chance to Avesh Khan, Umran Malik or Ravi Bishnoi.

He asserted: “It will be interesting to see how India approaches the third game now. Are we going to see a lot of changes now with the series in the pocket, or are we going to have the same XI. I would like to see maybe Avesh, Umran or Bishnoi get a game. From England’s point of view, the pressure of the series is off. So we might get to see something different.”

The third and final match of the three-match T20I series between Rohit Sharma-led India National Cricket Team and Jos Buttler-led England National Cricket Team will be played at the Trent Bridge, Nottingham on Sunday, July 10.
