Former Pakistan cricketer Danish Kaneria has said that the young India wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant is not “mature enough” to be captain of the India National Cricket Team.

Rishabh Pant, who has already established himself as India’s first-choice wicket-keeper across all three formats, is looked at as the future captain of Team India.

Pant recently led India in the five-match T20I series against South Africa in the absence of Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul. The series ended in a 2-2 draw but the wicketkeeper-batsman struggled for runs and he was able to score only 58 runs at an underwhelming strike rate of 105.45.

In a video shared on his YouTube channel, Danish Kaneria said that Pant did a “horrible job” as India’s captain in South Africa T20Is. He also said that India should not appoint Pant as captain if Rohit Sharma fails to recover in time for the rescheduled Test against England. He said:

“Rishabh Pant is not mature enough to be captain. He got a chance to lead the side in the South Africa series but did a horrible job. Captaincy also tends to take a toll on his batting. I feel that he shouldn’t be the captain anymore.”

India captain Rohit Sharma was tested positive for Covid-19 and he is doubtful for the rescheduled Test against England. The news of Rohit getting tested positive for Covid-19 came after the third day’s play of the warm-up match between India and Leicestershire. Also, vice-captain KL Rahul has been ruled out of the Test match due to an injury.

Meanwhile, Kaneria said that Bumrah should not be given the captaincy responsibility of the Indian team.

“BCCI has indicated that Rishabh Pant, Jasprit Bumrah or Ravichandran Ashwin could be given the captaincy if Rohit Sharma isn’t available. Bumrah shouldn’t be given the load of captaincy and he should rather concentrate on his bowling. I wouldn’t want him to lead the side in the fifth Test.”

The 5th and last Test match of the series between India and England, which was cancelled last year, will be played at the Edgbaston, Birmingham from Friday, July 1.
