India vs England, ENG Playing XI vs IND, India Tour Of England 2022, 2nd T20I. India will take on England in the second T20I at the Edgbaston cricket ground in Birmingham on Saturday (July 9). The visitors do not have a great record at Edgbaston whether it is Test or T20I with a no-win record at this venue haunting them.

England has played 3 T20I matches at Edgbaston for an all-win record. The two teams have faced each other in T20Is once at this venue, and England emerged a 3-run winner in 2014.

Hardik Pandya put in all-around performance as India defeated England by 50 runs in the first T20I at the Ageas Bowl in Southampton. Chasing a target of 199, England was bowled out for 148 in 19.3 overs. Hardik Pandya was the pick of the bowlers, having bagged four wickets.

Earlier, Hardik Pandya hit his maiden T20I fifty as India scored a total of 198 for eight. Hardik Pandya scored a 51 after Suryakumar Yadav and Deepak Hooda had played knocks of 39 and 33. For England, Chris Jordan was the pick of the bowlers with his spell of two for 23.

England is missing several of their first-choice players like Eoin Morgan (retired), Ben Stokes, Jonny Bairstow, and Joe Root (named in the ODI squad to give rest after the recently concluded rescheduled Test against India) besides Adil Rashid (gone to visit Mecca, Hajj Pilgrimage) but they have an excellent depth with respect to white-ball cricket, only second to the visitors. They are surely not going to change their approach but they got to find a way to score runs against Indian new ball bowlers who are of top quality, to say the least.

England came back pretty strongly in the second half of their bowling innings as the visitors could have crossed 200 rather easily given their start but their spinners held their nerves against the Indian middle-order batsmen. Pacer Chris Jordan bowled really well and had one of his rare good days in the first game.

England is likely to go in with the same team in the 2nd T20I. They have no injury concerns and since their bowlers did a fairly reasonable job, they wouldn’t be changing their bowling combination. England might look to push Liam Livingstone down the order as he is better at handling pace than Moeen Ali.

1st T20I:- India 198 for 8 (Hardik 51, Suryakumar 39, Hooda 33) beat England 148 (Moeen 36, Hardik 4-33) by 50 runs

England won’t be too disappointed with their effort in the first T20. They would know by now that collapses do happen, especially during tall run chases and newly appointed captain Jos Buttler should just take it as par for the course.

That said, they will be raring to come back strongly, particularly Jason Roy who looked like a club cricketer in the first T20, unable to pick the swing early and looking very tentative against Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Arshdeep Singh.

The home site is not likely to make a lot of changes to their playing XI. If at all, Richard Gleeson can come in for Tymal Mills who looked like the most hittable bowler in the England lineup in Southampton.

Jos Buttler

Jos Buttler who has been part of England’s white-ball teams for over a decade and is England’s new limited-overs skipper was clean bowled by Bhuvneshwar Kumar for a first-ball duck in the 1st T20I against India and will try to make amends. He played his first T20I game in 2011 and made his ODI debut a year later. He has been appointed full-time skipper recently in place of retired Eoin Morgan in white-ball limited-overs cricket.

The wicketkeeper-batsman has been an integral part of the set-up, having been a vice-captain since 2015, and has led the team 14 times previously (9 ODIs and 5 T20Is). He has represented England 151 times in ODIs scoring 4,120 runs at an average of 41.20, including 10 hundred.

In T20Is, he has won 89 caps scoring 2,140 runs with an average of 33.97. He managed 248 runs in only 3 ODIs against the Netherlands in the preceding ODI series. Phil Salt also scored 248 runs. Jos Buttler, Rajasthan Royals’ opening batter broke numerous batting records in the recently concluded IPL 2022. The 31-year-old scored 863 runs in 17 matches to win the orange cap this season and also scored the highest number of fours and sixes in the tournament.

Jason Roy

Jason Roy, the England opener has played 59 T20Is amassing 1450 runs and averages a modest 24.58. His strike rate is awesome- 141.6. He looked out of sorts in the 1st T20I against India, scoring only 4 runs off 16 balls at a pathetic strike rate of 25 before being dismissed by Hardik Pandya.

The 31-year-old South Africa-born English cricketer Jason Roy pulled out of the IPL 2022 to spend some time with his family. He played a match-winning 73-run innings against the Netherlands in the second ODI on Sunday (June 19).

During his stay at the crease, he hammered 13 boundaries and a six. He added 139 runs for the first wicket with fellow opener Phil Salt and set the stage for England’s 6-wicket win that also helped them to seal the series. He scored 175 runs in 3 ODIs against Netherlands averaging 87.5.

Dawid Malan

Dawid Malan became only the 2nd English men’s cricketer to score centuries in all three formats after Jos Buttler. Dawid Malan has played 22 Tests, 9 ODIs, and 37 T20Is. He averages a stunning 53.17 in ODIs and 40.65 in T20Is. He has exactly 1 century in each format of the game. He scored 21 off 14 balls before being bowled by Hardik Pandya in the 1st T20I against India but will try to make amends.

Dawid Malan created a new record in the first ODI vs the Netherlands as he raced away to his maiden hundred in the 50-over-format in just 91 deliveries. Jos Buttler also reached his fifty in 27 balls, kept attacking, reached the three-figure mark in just 47 balls, and ultimately remained unbeaten on 162. Phil Salt also scored 122 runs off just 93 deliveries in that game.

Liam Livingstone

Liam Livingstone, who has played 6 ODIs and 18 T20Is will feature in the limited-overs series against India. The spin-bowling all-rounder has been in sublime form with the bat of late. He recently smashed the fastest ODI fifty (off 17 balls) by an Englishman against the Netherlands at Amstelveen.

Liam Livingstone was one of the most expensive players in the IPL 2022 mega auction, fetching INR 11.5 crore from Punjab Kings, and he lived up to expectations. The 28-year-old scored 437 runs at a strike rate of 182.08 in 14 games, averaging 36.41. He had only managed 112 runs in nine innings between 2019 and 2021. He was dismissed without scoring in the 1st T20I against India and went wicketless too in the solitary over he bowled.

Moeen Ali

Moeen Ali had moderate success while batting as he averages only 19.23 in 50 T20Is amassing 673 runs at a strike rate of 138.76. He averages a shade above 25 in 115 ODIs and 64 Tests. While bowling, his average of 25.14 is better than ODIs (50.12) and Tests (36.66).

He has picked 35 scalps in the shortest format. In the 1st T20I against India, he removed both Indian openers and returned with figures of 2/26 in 2 overs. While batting, he top-scored for England, managing 36 runs off 20 balls.

Harry Brook, 23 years batter who can bowl medium-pace has played only 2 T20Is to date scoring 38 runs. He is yet to pick a wicket though. Harry Brook featured in England’s U19 squad during the 2018 U19 World Cup. He will face tough competition from Phil Salt though.

Phil Salt averages 58.67 in 6 ODIs and 20 in 3 T20Is. He had hit a ton against the minnows- the Netherlands. But since he is a keeper and can’t bowl, Harry Brook will be preferred ahead of him. Harry Brook scored 28 runs from 23 balls which included 2 fours and a six in the 1st T20I against India.

Chris Jordan

Chris Jordan has played 8 Tests, 34 ODIs, and 7 T20Is. His bowling average of 27.71 in the shortest format where he has picked 82 scalps is far better than the other two formats. He will face tough competition from Tymal Mills who has picked 11 scalps from 12 T20Is averaging 30.82.

He looked like the most promising bowler from England in the 1st T20I, returning with figures of 2/23 in 4 overs picking set batters Deepak Hooda and Suryakumar Yadav.

Reece Topley

Reece Topley has played 15 ODIs and 11 T20Is where he has picked 22 and 9 scalps respectively averaging 29 and 35.44 in the two limited-overs formats. He picked the prized scalp of Hardik Pandya but conceded 34 runs in 4 overs in the 1st T20I against the visitors.

Sam Curran

Sam Curran has played 24 Tests, 13 ODIs, and 17 T20Is. He has scored only 95 runs in the shortest format at a strike rate of 155.74 averaging only 15.83. He picked 16 scalps in 17 T20Is averaging 23.94-much better bowling stats compared to ODIs and Tests. He bowled 2 overs in the 1st T20I against India conceding 18 runs.

David Willey

David Willey has picked 55 ODIs and 32 T20Is. He has picked 77 and 38 scalps averaging 29.94 and 22.47 respectively. He can bat a bit as his average of 23.56 (ODIs) and 14 (T20Is) suggest. He didn’t play the 1st T20I against India as Tymal Mills (1/35 in 3 overs) was preferred ahead of him.

Matthew Parkinson

Matthew Parkinson, right-arm leg break spinner, has played 1 Test, 5 ODIs, and 5 T20Is. He averages 25.29 in the shortest format where he picked 7 scalps. His economy rate of 9.83 is a tad higher though but he will have chances to amend the stats as he will definitely play in place of spinner Adil Rashid, who hasn’t been named in the white-ball series for going to Hajj, Mecca, in 2nd T20I too despite conceding 44 runs in 4 overs in 1st T20I against India.
