India take on England in the first of the three ODIs in London on July 12. The match will be played at the Kia Oval starting from 5.30 pm IST (1.30 local time). India under Rohit Sharma won the T20I series 2-1 after losing the 5th Test in Edgbaston without him.

The Men in Blue were whitewashed 3-0 in the last ODI series that they played against South Africa in South Africa, This being the year of the T20 World Cup, more concentration is being given to T20I games and finding the right combination. The ODI series is not a part of the ICC Super League.

Indian skipper Rohit Sharma will open the batting. He looked in good touch in the T20I series but could not carry on. Rohit ideally would like to score big in the ODI series.

Dhawan was recalled into the ODI squad for the England series. He has previous experience of playing in English conditions. This is his last chance to make an impact if he wants to play in the T20 World Cup in Australia later this year.

Former Indian skipper Virat Kohli will bat at number three. He is going through a tough phase in his career where he is not scoring consistently. However, he has been back to the hilt by skipper Rohit Sharma to perform.

SKY is fresh off his maiden T20I ton in the final T20I against England. He just joins an elite list of Indian batsmen to score T20I centuries. He has made the number four position his own.

Rishabh Pant (WK)

Pant opened the batting in the last two T20Is and should be back to batting at number five in the ODIS. He scored a century in the Edgbaston Test batting at number five. He has been established in the Test format but has not yet cemented his place in India’s T20I and ODI sides.

Hardik Pandya

Pandya has been arguably the most in-form batsman for India in recent times. He scored against South Africa followed by England. He also scored his maiden T20I fifty against England. He will be important for India in the ODI series.

Ravindra Jadeja

Jadeja slots in at number seven as the second specialist all-rounder in the playing XI. Jadeja also scored a century at Edgbaston followed by a 46 in the second T20I. He has always been a key wicket-taker for India in white-ball cricket.

Jasprit Bumrah

Bumrah will be one of the three seamers in India’s playing XI. He led India at Edgbaston and was then rested for the T20I series. He should be back to lead the pace-attacking in the ODIs.

Mohammed Shami

Shami should be the second seamer in the playing Xi and bat at number nine. There are reports that he is not in the selectors radar for the T20 World Cup and the Indian pacer should utilise his chance to prove otherwise.

Arshdeep Singh

The pacer from Punjab made his T20I debut in the second T20I for India. He should be allowed to make his ODI debut in the first T20i. He impressed one and all on his maiden outing for India and should be given more chances.

Chahal concludes India’s likely playing XI for the first ODI against England. Chahal will pair up alongside Jadeja as the second spinner in the playing XI. India should go in with five specialist bowlers and Hardik as the all-rounder.
