Indian fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah has been named as the captain of the Test team for the fifth Test against England. The match will begin on July 1st in Edgbaston.

Rohit Sharma was officially ruled out of the Test after returning a positive result in his covid-19 test. He will be isolating himself and in his absence, Bumrah will be wearing the blazer when the captains walk out for the toss on Friday morning.

This will be the first time a fast bowler has led India in Tests since 1987 when Kapil Dev was the skipper. Bumrah is the 36th Test captain of the team and will be hoping to impress in his first opportunity.

Rishabh Pant set to act as Jasprit Bumrah’s deputy

Wicket-keeper batter, Rishabh Pant, has been named as the vice-captain of the team. He recently led the T20I team in the 5-match series against South Africa. India leads the series by a 2-1 margin having won at Lord’s and The Oval during the 2021 tour. The fifth Test was rescheduled after a covid outbreak and will be played from July 1-5 in Edgbaston.

Meanwhile, England has confirmed its playing XI for the Test with Zak Crawley and Alex Lees continuing to be backed. Sam Billings will be the keeper while James Anderson returns after a break.
