India and South Africa will battle it out in a three-match ODI series after the test series gets over and a lot of new entries into the team could be expected. India last played an ODI series in South Africa in 2018 which was a six-match series and India won it comfortably 4-1.

South Africa has been grooming a good squad for the next World cup in 2023 and they had an excellent T20 World cup 2021 despite their exit in the T20 World cup 2021. India cannot afford to take the Proteas likely in their own backyard and the series starts from 11 January. Here are 5 Indian players who can make their ODI debut in the series against South Africa.

IND vs SA: 5 Indian Players Who Can Make Their ODI Debut In The Series:

Ruturaj Gaikwad:

Ruturaj Gaikwad finished as the highest run-scorer in the IPL 2021 and he has rewarded a place in the Indian T20I squad in the home series against New Zealand. However, with the established openers of Rohit and Rahul, he might have to wait for his opportunity in the Indian colours.

There hasn’t been any doubt about the potential of Gaikwad who has relished batting at the top of the order and he can provide a backup option for the number four slot as well. His timing is impeccable and he is expected to make the cut into the playing XI in South Africa.

Venkatesh Iyer:

Venkatesh Iyer has been seen as the backup option for Hardik Pandya at the moment who has been facing injury issues. Iyer had a terrific IPL for the Kolkata Knight Riders and he almost single-handedly took the side to the finals of the tournament.

Iyer has made his T20I debut now in the series against New Zealand and so far he hasn’t been given many responsibilities to be assessed. He will certainly make it to the squad for the South Africa series and will make his debut as well providing an all-around option.

Harshal Patel:

Harshal Patel finished as the highest wicket-taker in the IPL 2021 season with 32 wickets to his name and he has started his international career with a bang. He provides some stability with the bat in the late middle order and is very useful as a bowler in the death overs especially.

India has been searching for wicket-takers in the T20 World cup 2021 and Harshal Patel is certainly one among the names that can provide a big difference. His excellent slower ones have deceived the batsmen and he will be one of the names discussed for the South Africa tour.

Avesh Khan has finally found his best rhythm with the ball and he looked like the most improved bowler in the IPL 2021. He finished as the second-highest wicket-taker and was rewarded a place in the Indian squad for the New Zealand series.

Avesh has the promise to bowl a lot of pace and can hit the hard lengths for the batsman consistently. His death bowling has also been very impressive in recent times and he deserves a debut in the upcoming South Africa series.

Deepak Hooda:

One of the surprising names on the tour of South Africa could be Deepak Hooda with his ability to clear the ropes in the back end of the innings and bowl some off-spin as well. Hooda had a decent IPL for the Punjab Kings after starting with a bang.

However, he made up for it with some brilliant show in the ongoing Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy and Hooda has scored 294 runs in 6 games at an average of 73.50 and a strike rate of 168. He could well be the all-rounder India has been searching for in the middle overs in ODI cricket.
