The national selection panel is set to announce the Test squad for the upcoming tour of South Africa. As for the ODIs, the Chetan Sharma-led panel is holding off for the time being as there are quite a few decisions that need contemplation.

According to reports, the senior members in the team – Ajinkya Rahane, Cheteshwar Pujara, and Ishant Sharma are likely to receive a few more chances while Shikhar Dhawan is also on the cards for a return to the white-ball format after being snubbed for the T20 World Cup.

The ODI captaincy is a sensitive issue. There is a school of thought that Rohit Sharma should be given charge of all white-ball cricket after being appointed the T20I captain. But for that, the selectors need to sit with Virat Kohli and know where he stands with his batting. The situation will have to be discussed with Rohit too because he is also seeking clarity on his role,” a source was quoted as saying to TOI.

A huge Indian squad likely to travel to South Africa

The depth in India’s talent pool will allow them to name a large squad for the upcoming tour. Since the pandemic times don’t allow players to be flown in if there’s an injury in the squad, it is best to take as many cricketers as possible to avoid a shortage of members.

India will play the first ODI in South Africa on Jan 19. That’s more than a month away. The Vijay Hazare Trophy is going on. The selectors will like to watch the talent available there. They have made it clear to Indian players that they must play domestic tournaments when they are not with the Indian team.

As for Dhawan, he has been a consistent performer in ODIs. Even in the last two series, he has performed. A huge squad will be traveling to South Africa. Leaving out a veteran on this tour could put a question mark on his future. Ishant needs more overs under his belt and his experience in the dressing room is also valuable,” the source mentioned.

Currently, the Test squad will depart to Johannesburg on December 16. The first Test is scheduled to begin on December 26.
