Former Indian batsman Sanjay Manjrekar showered praise on Indian wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant for his sensational performance in the second ODI of the three-match ODI series against South Africa at Boland Park, Paarl, on Friday, January 21.

Rishabh Pant played a terrific knock for the Indian team in the 2nd ODI against South Africa. He scored 85 runs off 71 balls including 10 fours and 2 maximums, before getting dismissed in the 33rd over of the match by wrist spinner Tabraiz Shamsi.

Speaking on ESPNcricinfo, Manjrekar said that Rishabh Pant’s innings in the second ODI was a reminder of his exceptional skills.

“He batted at no.4 in last game as well and traditionally the no.4 is somebody who has all the gears, you know the first gear, picking up the singles, putting the ball in the gaps because there are 5 fielders inside the circle. Rishabh Pant is not your ideal No.4, the traditional No.4, who has all the gears. He is more block-block and hit the ball out of the ground,” Manjrekar said.

“But today’s innings was another reminder of how exceptional this guy is, I mean he is on slot against Tabraiz Shamsi. The first ball that he bowled, Pant hit him for the four the sweep shot was played much squarer, the second one finer and then there was a square cut,” he added.

Manjrekar further added that Pant is a hard batter to bowl to. He further said that there was a huge impact of Pant’s knock in the Indian innings.

“So, hard batter to bowl to, exceptional skill and if not for that wicket, Tabraiz Shamsi got him out eventually, India would have been looking at 310-320. India have got close to 290 is more the Pant effect on the Indian innings, because this is not Indian batting coming back into form this is more Pant effect on the whole innings.”

“Shamsi might have got him out but Pant won that battle, to be honest, the way he used his feet he swept him square. He is a special talent there is no doubt, I love his batting,” he said on ESPNcricinfo.

“He came in and he played as if there is nothing wrong no questions about the pitch, it was really a brilliant innings,” he added.
