IND vs SA: Virat Kohli Surpasses Sachin Tendulkar To Score Most Runs In Away ODIs For India

Former Indian skipper Virat Kohli went past Sachin Tendulkar’s tally of most runs in away ODIs for India in the first ODI in Paarl. Kohli scored 51 in his very first ODI innings in 2022 and added a crucial 92-run partnership in the quest for India’s chase of 297. Kohli needed nine runs to go past Tendulkar’s tally which he did in a canter. 

Sachin Tendulkar scored 5065 runs in 147 innings while Kohli went past him 104 innings with a far more better average of 58 to Tendulkar’s 37. Kohli os followed by MS Dhoni (4520 runs in 124 inns), Rahul Dravid (3998 runs in 110 inns) and Sourav Ganguly (3468 runs in 105 inns) in the list of Indians with most ODI runs overseas. Kohli has scored 1287 runs against South Africa and is the eighth-highest run-getter against them in ODIs. He has scored four centuries and six fifties against the Proteas in 27 matches at a staggering average of 64.35. 

Virat Kohli Added 92-Run Stand With Shikhar Dhawan

Virat Kohli played well for his 51 but then was dismissed trying to sweep Tabraiz Shamsi. The ball took the key end of Kohli’s bat and lobbed in the air for Temba Bavuma to complete an easy catch.

Kohli scored 558 runs, the last time India toured South Africa in 2018. He scored three hundreds and one fifty in that series. He entered into this series as a player having stepped down from Test captaincy after India lost the Test series.

Former Indian batting coach Sanjay Bangar said that he expects Kohli to bat with freedom having been relieved from captaincy. 

“The way I look, Virat Kohli is fabulous as a leader and he did that job really well for over six years. Now it’s time to unveil Virat Kohli 3.0 because he can be as damaging a batsman with no responsibility. So I look forward to some great batting performances from him because Virat Kohli the batsman is what sets the world on fire” said Bangar on Kohli.
