Former India captain Dilip Vengsarkar wants the BCCI selectors to pick opening batsman Ruturaj Gaikwad in the squad for the upcoming South Africa ODI series.
The India tour of South Africa is set to begin from December 26 and India will play 3 Tests and as many as ODIs in the tour. Newly-appointed white-ball captain Rohit Sharma will be leading the team in the ODI games and Virat Kohli will continue to lead the team in Test cricket.

He has scored three consecutive centuries for Maharashtra in the Vijay Hazare Trophy. On Sunday his steak of centuries ended as he got out after scoring 21 against Uttrakhand. Meanwhile, before that he had scored 124 off 129 balls against Kerala, following scores of 154* vs Chhattisgarh and 136 vs Madhya Pradesh.
How Many More Runs Does Ruturaj Gaikwad Need To Score To Prove Himself? – Dilip Vengsarkar
Speaking to TOI about young opening batsman, Vengsarkar said:
“You must pick a man in form. How many more runs does he need to score to prove himself? It is high time the selectors pick him straight away and give him a proper opportunity.”
Gaikwad might not get the opening slot in the Indian team because captain Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan are considered as first choice openers and KL Rahul is also in the race.
However, the former cricketer added that Gaikwad can bat at No.3 and he must be included in the team immediately because he is not 18-19 and already 24 and there is no point in picking him when he turns 28. He said:
“He can bat at No 3 also. He must be accommodated in the team, It’s not like Ruturaj 18 or 19. He’s 24 now. There’s no point in picking him when he’ll be 28.”
