Shardul Thakur Was One Of The Chief Architects Behind India's Win At The Gabba, And In England– Sunil Gavaskar

Legendary Indian batsman Sunil Gavaskar has lavished praise on bowling all-rounder Shardul Thakur and labelled him as one of the “chief architects” behind India’s dominant performance in Australia and England.

India beached the Gabba fortress in 2021 and registered a historic Test series win in Australia in the absence of several top players, Shardul Thakur who played the Gabba Test scored 67 runs batting at the No.8 position and bagged 7 wickets in the match.

Also, in the India tour of England where India was leading by 2-1 before the last Test was postponed, Shardul smashed the fifties in both the innings at the Oval and became the sixth cricketer in Test history to reach this feat while batting at No. 8.

Meanwhile, in the ongoing Test series in South Africa, Shardul Thakur bagged a 7-wicket haul at the Wanderers, Johannesburg in South Africa’s first innings. He became the sixth Indian to have a Test fifer in Johannesburg.

Batting legend Sunil Gavaskar showered praise on Shardul and highlighted his remarkable performances in the Australia and England tour.

“When Bumrah and Shami were not available to play, he not only got seven wickets but also a half-century to his name. He was one of the chief architects behind India’s win at the Gabba. And in England, there were occasions when the Indian team didn’t post many runs. He came in and smashed half-centuries in both innings. He’s also kept picking two odd wickets in each innings,” said Gavaskar on SuperSport during Day 2 of the ongoing second Test.

Gavaskar added that the 30-year-old Shardul is a player who gives his 100 per cent every time he steps onto the field.

 “He is just the kind of player you want in your team. He gives his 100 per cent. He knows he is not going to always be a certainty and hence, the trying never stops. He understands what he needs to do and gives it all every time without any complaints,” said Gavaskar.

Gavaskar also labelled Shardul as a “great trier” and said he deserved every bit of that 5-wicket haul at the Wanderers, Johannesburg.

“A batter is facing Shami & Bumrah and he suddenly is up against a bowler (Shardul) who is 5-10 kph slower. He can think to score some runs but Shardul bowls just around the off-stump and gets the ball to move away. Bavuma was down the pitch even before the ball was released and Shardul smartly bowled is short. He fully deserves his five-wicket haul as he’s such a great trier,” he further added.
