Twitter Reacts As KL Rahul Becomes Only 2nd Indian Opener To Smash A Test Hundred In South Africa

India Test vice-captain and opening batsman KL Rahul smashed a sensational century off 218 deliveries in the Boxing Day Test against Dean Elgar-led South Africa National Cricket Team at the SuperSport Park, Centurion on Sunday.

KL Rahul who himself had recently said that he never thought he will make a comeback in the Test team has witnessed a big turnaround in his red-ball career in 2021.

He was not even considered as 2nd choice opener of the team as Rohit Sharma used to open the innings with Shubman Gill in Tests, also after Gill got injured in the recent India tour of England, Mayank Agarwal was set to open the innings with Rohit Sharma, however, he too got injured and KL Rahul was given the responsibility to open the innings in the difficult conditions in England.

Rahul took the opportunity with both hands and smashed a century to become the permanent opener of the Test team. In the recent New Zealand series he got injured and missed out on two Tests at home, still, it didn’t have any impact on his performance as he has smashed yet another overseas century and this time in South Africa.

Meanwhile, after India won the toss and opted to bat vice-captain KL Rahul opened the innings with his  Mayank Agarwal in the absence of Rohit Sharma and both the openers looked decent out in middle and they completed the fifty partnership off 105 balls. At lunch, India were at 83/0 in 28.0 overs with KL Rahul at 29 and Mayank Agarwal at 46 runs.

After the lunch, Rahul and Mayank had a century partnership and they became the 3rd Indian opening pair to register a century partnership against South Africa in South Africa in tests after Wasim Jaffer, Dinesh Karthik in 2007 and Gautam Gambhir, Virender Sehwag in 2010. Then Mayank Agarwal got out against Lungi Ngidi, however, Rahul stood strong on one end and added 82 runs with skipper Virat Kohli who also got in 69th over.

Meanwhile, in 218 balls Rahul completed his century and he became the only second Indian opener to score a Test hundred in South Africa after Wasim Jaffer who smashed a century at Cape Town in 2007. Also, this is Rahul’s 7th Test ton.
