Indian all-rounder Washington Sunday has returned a positive result in his covid-19 Test and is unlikely to take part in India’s 3-match ODI series against South Africa.

Sundar has been named in the squad for the series which starts on January 19. He was scheduled to fly out to Cape Town along with the other members who are part of the ODI squad but not the Test team.

However, it now looks bleak for the 22-year-old as he will have to go into isolation before returning a negative result in the RT-PCR test. By the time he recovers from the virus, the Indian team would have likely flown out as they have to undergo quarantine upon arriving in South Africa as well.

I have nothing to comment, I will come back to you soon,” Sundar told Cricbuzz on Tuesday. Currently, he is believed to be in Mumbai where the other teammates are staying.

As for the squad, Ravichandran Ashwin has come back into the 18-member squad having last played the 50-over format back in 2017. He went out of favor with the Indian limited-overs squad due to the rise of Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal.

Notably, Ruturaj Gaikwad has also been rewarded for his brilliant form in the Vijay Hazare Trophy. Gaikwad scored four centuries in five matches and ended as the top run-scorer of the tournament. Venkatesh Iyer, who debuted in T20Is against New Zealand, has also been called up for the ODI series.

India’s squad for ODI series:

KL Rahul (c), Shikhar Dhawan, Ruturaj Gaekwad, Virat Kohli, Suryakumar Yadav, Shreyas Iyer, Venkatesh Iyer, Rishabh Pant (wk), Ishan Kishan (wk), Y Chahal, R Ashwin, W Sundar, J Bumrah (vc), Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Deepak Chahar, Prasidh Krishna, Shardul Thakur, Mohd. Siraj.
