Many game experts, including former India captain and former chief selector Kris Srikkanth, were not pleased with the experiment of opening with Suryakumar Yadav and were upset with Rohit Sharma for making the choice.
The upcoming West Indies series offers Rohit Sharma and the Indian coaching staff the ideal opportunity as India continues to be in an innovative approach as they hunt for a few solutions before they finalize their 15-member team for the 2022 T20 World Cup.
India amassed 190 for 6 in the opening T20I on a two-paced Tarouba track despite the constant loss of wickets. India continued to adopt their offensive batting strategy in the second game, which was played in Basseterre on a similarly difficult pitch, but it backfired this time as they were bowled out for 138 with four balls remaining in their innings.
In both games of the T20I series against West Indies, Suryakumar started at center field. In the first game of the series, he hit three boundaries and a six on the way to his 16-ball 24. In the second game, he only achieved 11 off 6 with one maximum.
‘Suryakumar should be batting at No.4’: Kris Srikkanth
Before the second game of the series began on Monday in St. Kitts, Kris Srikkanth spoke to Fan Code and warned Rohit against picking Suryakumar as the series opener. He claimed that a World Cup lock would lose confidence after a few setbacks, which India cannot afford.
“At No. 4, Suryakumar Yadav is a brilliant player.” In the T20 World Cup, he should bat at No. 4. So, why do you want to force him to open? If you need someone to open, replace Shreyas Iyer with Ishan Kishan” Kris Srikkanth said.
“What I am trying to say is that you should not spoil a cricketer like Suryakumar Yadav. Please do not do so. I will tell you what will happen: after a few failures, he will lose confidence. “Cricket is a game of confidence,” Kris Srikkanth said.
The West Indies will face India in the third T20I of the ongoing series. The third T20I between West Indies and India will be played on August 2. (Tuesday).
