Former Indian skipper Virat Kohli has had a torrid time off late in the last two to three years in Indian cricket. He has not been scoring consistently as Indian fans and cricket experts continue to wait for his elusive 71st international ton. His mode of dismissals has been another talking point in his career.

Meanwhile, 2022 has been a year where his place in the ODI and T20I teams has been questioned. He also has been rested from a few series and trips. He was rested for the South Africa series at home, followed by the Ireland series. he played the last two T20Is and the ODIs against England and now has again been rested for the Windies T20I series.

There has been enough debate about whether to rest him was the right decision by the BCCI and the management. Meanwhile, Kohli’s childhood coach Rajkumar Sharma said that Kohli still has a lot to offer to Indian cricket and he is India’s long-term number three still. His comments came after Shreyas Iyer scored two back-to-back fifties against West Indies batting at number three.

Not Necessary That Only Shreyas Iyer Takes Over Virat Kohli At Number 3: Rajkumar Sharma

“It is important. See, I don’t think anyone can replace Virat Kohli at no.3 for some time, but we will have to develop youngsters at that position. And I think there will be many experiments on that position too. It isn’t necessary that only Shreyas Iyer takes over that role,” said Rajkumar on DD Sports.

Speaking further on Iyer’s technique against the short-pitched deliveries, Sharma said that he needs to work on his weakness to be India’s number three in the future.

“He is a suspect against genuine fast bowling sometimes, especially against short-pitched deliveries. He has been dismissed on many occasions playing the short delivery in the past. I think his best position would be no.4 or no.5.

“He accelerates really well, he paces his innings well. By the time he arrives in either of those positions, the ball wouldn’t be moving much and it is a high possibility he won’t be targeted straightaway. So, I think he can be a better batsman (in that role),” concluded Kohli’s childhood coach.

There are reports of Virat Kohli playing the upcoming series against Zimbabwe to get back his form ahead of the Asia Cup and the T20 World Cup.
