In the fifth T20I of their series on Sunday, former cricketer Parthiv Patel remarked on how the West Indies batsmen appeared to be completely lost against the Indian spinners (August 7).

Speaking on Cricbuzz, he emphasised that the West Indian hitters’ application seemed to be the issue. Given that they also had trouble with left-arm finger spinner Axar Patel, Parthiv argued that their problems weren’t restricted to wrist spinners.

You Don’t Expect That In An International Game: Parthiv Patel

A performance of this kind is unacceptable at the top level, according to the former India goalkeeper. He emphasised that hitters might struggle against subpar turners. He did mention that India scored 188 runs on the same surface, though.

He explained: “Apart from the wrist spinners, Axar Patel, a finger spinner, also picked up three wickets. I don’t think West Indies batters are applying themselves enough or maybe they were not putting enough prize on their wicket.”

Parthiv Patel added: “That is why we are seeing this game after game. There’s no contest, and you don’t expect that in an international game. It’s understandable if it’s a rank turner where it’s unplayable. It wasn’t such a wicket, with one team scoring 190, while the other team managed just 100.”

Notably, West Indies lost the rubber’s last match by a humiliating 88 runs after being bowled out for a pitiful score of 100. It was the first time in T20I history when spinners took all ten wickets.

While Axar Patel and Kuldeep Yadav each took three wickets, Ravi Bishnoi claimed four. The Men in Blue clinched a 4-1 series triumph against the hosts after their crushing victory.

If You Are Not Reading Wrist Spin From The Hands, It Is Just A Guessing Game: Parthiv Patel

If batters merely attempt to swing their bats blindly against wrist spinners, according to Parthiv Patel, they won’t have much success. He made a point of saying that the delivery should be made from the wrist.

He discussed how, if the batter is unable to read it from the hand, it becomes a guessing game. Parthiv remarked that it is more difficult if you try to predict which way the ball would spin.

Parthiv Patel added: “If you’re lucky enough, you might get one or two hits if you’re just swinging, as one of them might get connected.

But if you are not reading wrist spin from the hand, it is a guessing game and you are not in a position to even try and maneuver it for singles because you are just planting your foot straight and hoping it’s a ball that you’ve guessed.”

During their just finished Caribbean Tour’s white-ball matches, the Indian team displayed incredible form. They defeated the West Indies in both the ODI and T20I series, which will undoubtedly boost their confidence going into the Asia Cup 2022.
