West Indies lost the first ODI match by three runs in a last-ball thrilling encounter as lower middle order batters Akeal Hosein (32*) and Romario Shepherd (39*) gave an incredible fightback in the chase of 308.
West Indies big players like Shai Hope, Nicholas Pooran and Rovman Powell weren’t successful in the big chase but some names did stand up to the occasion. It was India’s game from the first balls as their top order comprised of Shikhar Dhawan (97), Shubman Gill (64) and Shreyas Iyer (54) powered to a valuable total in the first innings.
If West Indies lose the second ODI then they will lose their 12th consecutive ODI series against India. The last time they defeated them was in 2006 at home under Brian Lara’s leadership.
Let’s look at West Indies’ predicted playing XI against the Men in Blue in the second ODI.
IND vs WI: West Indies’ Predicted Playing XI Against India In 2nd ODI
1) Shai Hope
The West Indies wicketkeeper failed to deliver at the top getting dismissed for just seven runs in the big chase. Hope, a purist hitter of the game and known for toying with the opposition attack, has not been at his best having scored 58 runs at 11.6 in his last five innings.
2) Kyle Mayers
Mayers was the top scorer for the hosts with 75 in 68 balls, hitting 10 fours and a six, at a strike rate of 110.29. His wicket paved the way for India to come back into the game. The West Indies all-rounder bowled two overs and leaked 17 runs from them.
3) Shamarh Brooks
Brooks played a second fiddle to Mayers in their 117 runs partnership that gave them the hopes to chase the humungous 309. Brooks was caught by Shreyas Iyer off Mohammed Siraj’s bowling, he departed on 46.
4) Brandon King
After the dismissals of Brooks and Mayers, it was King who carried on the show and build the innings for West Indies. King is one of the underrated batters in the West Indies ranks that hasn’t got his share of appreciation. He batted safely and negated the threat of spinners in the middle and was the last proper batter for the team to get out on 54 in the 45th over.
5) Nicholas Pooran
Nicholas Pooran went for the big shots to maximise the scoring chances, and the West Indies captain took a toll on Prasidh Krishna, clubbing him for successive sixes in the 32nd over. Instead of playing in a composed manner, Pooran was desperate to take the rest of the Indian attack. He toe-ended a shot to mid-on where Prasidh took a comfortable catch off Siraj’s bowling.
6) Rovman Powell
The power-hitting prospect Rovman Powell too didn’t do any justice to his potential that was showcased in the IPL 2022 for Delhi Capitals. Powell hit one boundary and fell into the trap of Yuzvendra Chahal, trying to go big, but poked one at first slip in the safe hands of Deepak Hooda.
7) Keemo Paul
Paul pulled a hamstring during the third ODI against Bangladesh on July 16 and didn’t bowl a single over in that game. The 24-year-old is part of West Indies’ squad for the three-match ODI series but there is confirmation regarding his fitness. Paul could replace Jayden Seals if the former is fit to play in the second ODI.
8) Akeal Hosein
The West Indies left-arm spinner picked the key wicket of Suryakumar Yadav in the first ODI. He led the fightback in the chase alongside Romario Shepherd to show the depth in their batting unit. Although they lost by three runs, Hosein hit a run-a-ball 32 with the help of two boundaries.
9) Romario Shepherd
Shepherd might not have had a great day with the ball but made a big statement on his batting ability. The Sunrisers Hyderabad player smashed 39 runs in 25 balls, including three boundaries and two sixes but failed to pull off the winning shot when five runs were required of the last ball.
10) Alzarri Joseph
Joseph cleaned up Deepak Hooda and Axar Patel to finish 2/62 on a tiresome day for the entire bowling unit. Joseph is leading the bowling attack and will thrive to come harder in the upcoming matches.
11) Gudakesh Motie
It was the left-arm spinner who denied India’s stand-in skipper Shikhar Dhawan to score his first hundred as the captain of the team. Motie also picked the wicket of Shreyas Iyer later in the innings. The 27-year-old was playing only his fourth ODI match and amassed eight wickets at 16.75.
