Sanjay Manjrekar believes KL Rahul will want to show the selectors that he is at the peak of his abilities in the ODI series against Zimbabwe.
Rahul was initially left out of India’s team for the three-match series against the Chevrons. He was later added after proving his fitness and even replaced Shikhar Dhawan as the tour’s captain.
Manjrekar was questioned about the significance of the series from India’s standpoint during an interview on the Sports 18 program “Sports Over the Top”. He answered:
“A few significant players will be in the limelight. One is KL Rahul, who will be examined to see if his protracted injury absence has any impact on him. Although he appears to be a lock to make the T20 World Cup team, he wants to show the selectors that he has not lost any of his batting rhythms.”
‘ I am guessing that KL Rahul will open the innings’: Sanjay Manjrekar
Sanjay Manjrekar was subsequently questioned about Rahul’s position in the Zimbabwe series. He answered:
“A difficult decision since in addition to Ruturaj Gaikwad, other players who open in limited-overs cricket include Ishan Kishan and Sanju Samson. KL Rahul will probably start the innings.”
Sanjay Manjrekar elaborated on Rahul’s ability to bat at any position in ODI cricket:
“His ODI record shows that he has also played down the order. Because of his skill, he can have a significant influence at No. 1, No. 4, or No. 5. He resembles Suryakumar Yadav somewhat.”
In ODI cricket, three of Rahul’s five hundred have come at the top of the order. The 30-year-old has had terrific success in the middle order as well, but he could prefer to start the batting to maximize his time at the wicket.
