IPL 2022 is just a few months away as according to BCCI’s earlier plans, the 15th edition of the tournament is expected to take place in April this year. However, due to the rising COVID cases in the country due to the spread of the Omicron variant of coronavirus, BCCI is planning to conduct the entire IPL 2022 in Mumbai.

The last year’s IPL 2021 was severely affected due to the second wave of COVID-19 pandemic in the country. BCCI planned to conduct IPL 2021 in India with 6 venues. However, as soon as the teams moved to different cities, some players tested positive and the tournament had to be postponed. Later, the tournament took place in September-October 2021 with the new venue UAE.

BCCI Considering To Conduct IPL 2022 In Mumbai: Reports

With the surge in COVID cases, BCCI is preparing a plan B for IPL 2022. According to reports, BCCI might conduct the entire tournament in Mumbai city itself, so that the players do not need to travel to different cities during the tournament.

BCCI is looking for two options for the same. The board might either go with three centres or 10 centres. The three possible centres are The Wankhede Stadium, CCI Stadium, and DY Patil Stadium, all of which are located in Mumbai.

According to reports, the idea of scheduling the tournament in the UAE is not part of the discussions so far. However, the board is considering to prepone the tournament from its date of April 2 to March 25, as this will lead to fewer double-headers and day games.

Meanwhile, IPL 2022 is lagging behind in its schedule. The process of forming the two new teams is still under process. While the Lucknow franchise has been cleared to form a team, Ahmebadad franchise owners CVC Capitals are yet to get a go-ahead from BCCI to form a team due to a pending issue over their links to betting companies.

Moreover, BCCI has announced IPL 2022 auction dates as February 12 and 13, 2021, but before that, the two new teams need to pick 3 players in their squads from the pool of released players. Hence, it is quite likely that the current dates for the mega auction will be postponed by a week or so. The process of picking three players was expected to complete in December 2021, however, it was delayed due to the pending CVC issue.
