The 19-year-old Sri Lankan pacer Matheesha Pathirana, who is part of Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022, bagged his maiden IPL wicket by dismissing young Gujarat Titans (GT) opener Shubman Gill in the 62nd match of the IPL 2022 at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Sunday, May 15.
Sri Lanka Under-19 star Matheesha Pathirana, who has a bowling action very similar to legendary pacer Lasith Malinga, made his IPL debut in CSK’s second-last Indian Premier League 2022 game and bagged a wicket on his first ball.
The right-arm pacer dismissed Gill on the first ball of the 8th over and the GT opener was able to score only 18 runs off 17 balls, including 3 fours.
Matheesha Pathirana bowled a full-length delivery in the middle that foxed the GT opener as Gill was very late in bringing his bat down for the flick and the ball went past the bat to crash onto the pad and the on-field umpire raised the finger.
Gill instantly went for a DRS but the snicko confirmed that there was pad first and there were three reds, which forced Shubman Gill to walk back to the dugout.
CSK Score 133/5 While Batting First vs Gujarat Titans
While batting first, the Chennai Super Kings batters did a poor job against the GT bowling unit. In the powerplay, CSK lost the wicket of Devon Conway and they scored 47/1. Sai Kishore provided GT with a second breakthrough by dismissing all-rounder Moeen Ali for 21 in the 9th over.
Meanwhile, Ruturaj Gaikwad completed his half-century off 44 balls, including 4 fours and one six and this was his 10th fifty in the IPL.
Gaikwad’s 49-ball 53 runs knock was ended on the last ball of the 16th over, which was bowled by Rashid Khan. After that, CSK kept batting extremely slow and they were able to score 133/5.
