Daniel Sams won the Player of the Match award in the 59th match of the Indian Premier League (IPL 2022), which was played between MS Dhoni-led Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Rohit Sharma-led Mumbai Indians (MI) at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Thursday, May 12.

Mumbai Indians won the toss and invited Chennai Super Kings to bat first in the El Clasico of the Indian Premier League (IPL). The MI bowling unit did an exceptional job and they were able to bundle out CSK for 97.

Left-arm pacer Daniel Sams registered the best bowling figures for Mumbai Indians as he picked 3 wickets for 16 runs in his 4 overs quota. Notably, he dismissed in-form opener Devon Conway and Moeen Ali in the first over of the match and then he dismissed last year’s orange cap winner Ruturaj Gaikwad in the 5th over.

Chasing the target, Mumbai Indians lost 4 wickets inside powerplay overs. However, Tilak Varma once again shined with the bat and scored 34 runs and Tim David smashed quickly 16 runs to help Mumbai Indians win their 3rd game of the season.

I just figured out that, I was focusing on the batter too much and not on my strength – Daniel Sams

During the post-match presentation ceremony, Daniel Sams said that his first few games for Mumbai Indians (MI) didn’t go very well but then he reflected on those poor performances and made improvements. He asserted:

“The first few games didn’t go to plan. Had a little bit of time to reflect on those performances. I just figured out that. I was focusing on the batter too much and not on my strengths. That was something to work on.”

He added that he has got different plans for different batters in the cash-rich league. He said:

“We have different plans for different batters. We spoke about that – using short balls to all batters.”

Daniel Sams further added that batting at No.3 was an exciting opportunity for him and he revealed that it was Mahela Jayawardene’s plan to send him up the order. He also said that he has had a great experience in the Indian Premier League and the Wankhede Stadium surface was bowling friendly. He asserted:

“(Batting at No. 3) I was really excited to get the opportunity, that’s something MJ (Mahela Jayawardene) spoke about to me today. The whole IPL, beautiful wickets to bowl on. It’s been enjoyable, today’s pitch was bowling-friendly.”
