Supremely talented young South African batter Dewald Brevis was picked up by Mumbai Indians (MI) for INR 3 crores in the IPL 2022 mega auction. The young batter had come into the limelight during the recent ICC U19 World Cup 2022 in West Indies, where he was the highest run-getter.

Brevis, dubbed “Baby AB” due to similarities between the batting style of him and South African batting legend AB de Villiers, had an amazing outing in the recent ICC U19 World Cup 2022 in the Caribbean, as he broke the record of most runs in one edition of U19 World Cup, as he made 506 runs at an outstanding average of 84.33.

Brevis’ haul of 506 runs broke the record of India opener Shikhar Dhawan who had made 505 runs in the 2008 edition of the T20 World Cup. He scored two hundreds and three fifties in his six appearances, and also picked up seven wickets at 28.57. This got him the Player of the Tournament award as well.

He made 65 against India U19, 104 against Uganda, 96 against Ireland, 97 against England, and finished off with 138 against Bangladesh in their match for 7th-8th place.

“To be called Baby AB…I don’t even know what to say. I am nowhere near what AB de Villiers was. He is a guy I grew up idolizing, he was my role model from the first time I watched cricket. But I love being called that, it’s a real honour and surreal,” the official website of Cricket South Africa (CSA) quoted Brevis as saying.
