Arshdeep Singh, a fast bowler for the Punjab Kings, believes that Odean Smith’s overthrow, which gave Gujarat Titans an extra run and reintroduced ‘Man of the Moment’ Rahul Tewatia to the attack, was crucial in the end.

Titans needed 19 points off the final over to get to 190. In the last over, Odean Smith was required to defend the tasks, and he got off to a good start, with a dot ball also resulting in the run-out of skipper Hardik Pandya.

Tewatia, the new man at the bat, then managed to get a single, and David Miller smashed a boundary in the next ball to keep Gujarat in the game.

The Proteas hitter was able to escape his arms on the next pitch, but Smith’s overthrow allowed Gujarat one run and put Tewatia back on strike.

Tewatia,  delivered beautifully, hauling Smith narrowly over deep midwicket, with the defender almost catching him before sliding over the rope, and then slog sweeping the penultimate delivery over the long-on boundary for a huge six to save Gujarat Titans from defeat against Punjab.

After Odean Smith’s overthrow, Arshdeep Singh backed him:

The last-over overthrow has been hotly discussed, and Odean Smith is being blamed for PBKS’ defeat for allowing the crucial run, which put Tewatia on strike. With a dot there, the best outcome GT could have gotten from PBKS would have been a super over.
Arshdeep Singh added that his team had played plenty of nerve-wracking games to get spooked by such roller-coaster scenarios.

“Over the last few years, the PBKS has played several exciting games as a team. We’ve played several matches that have come down to the last over or even the final delivery, so our emotions are relatively stable now.”

“As a result, we don’t see the issue any differently. We want to remain stable as a team at all times, whether we win or lose, and enjoy our cricket.”

The Titans next play against Sunrisers Hyderabad at the DY Patil Stadium on April 11.
