IPL 2022 Auction: 3 Teams Which Can Target David Warner. Australian cricketer, David Warner is no longer going to play for Sunrisers Hyderabad in the Indian Premier League. The franchise didn’t include their former skipper in their retention list of players. SRH retained Kane Williamson, Abdul Samad and Umran Malik for the next edition of the tournament.
Warner is the most successful batsman for SRH in the history of the Indian Premier League. No other batsman has scored most runs for the franchise than Warner in all these years in IPL. Under his captaincy, SRH won their maiden IPL title in 2016. Warner wreaked havoc that season as he amassed 848 runs in 17 matches at an average of 60.57. Warner notched as many as 9 half-centuries during the tournament.
Since its arrival in IPL, SRH has been one of the most consistent outfits in IPL. However, they had a forgettable outing last year, having finished at the bottom of the table. David Warner was relieved of the captaincy duties midway during the season and then dropped him from the playing XI as well. Ahead of the IPL 2022 Mega Auctions, Warner is likely to go under the hammer. On that note, let’s take a look at three teams that might target David Warner at the auctions:
IPL 2022 Auction: 3 Teams Which Can Target David Warner
Royal Challengers Bangalore
Virat Kohli has stepped down from the captaincy role for RCB as he had earlier announced that he won’t be leading the Royal Challengers Bangalore from next year. Also, AB de Villiers recently announced retirement from all formats of the game. Ahead of the next edition of the tournament, RCB have retained the likes of Virat Kohli, Glenn Maxwell and M Siraj.
With AB de Villiers not in the team, RCB would be looking to add a world-class cricketer who could bolster their batting department. Add to that, the franchise will also be eying on someone who could lead the team from next year. Adding David Warner to the team could solve both issues. Warner is a destructive batsman at the top of the order and is a successful captain in IPL. The Royal Challengers Bangalore will definitely eye on him at the auctions.
Punjab Kings
After playing for four editions, KL Rahul has decided to part ways with Punjab Kings for the next edition of the tournament. KL Rahul was the standout batsman for Punjab Kings over the years. Since his arrival, he consistently top-scored for the franchise in all the seasons. However, Punjab finished at the bottom half of the table despite KL Rahul’s contributions with the bat.
Ahead of the next edition of the tournament, Punjab Kings will be playing with a different leader. They have retained Mayank Agarwal and Arshdeep Singh for IPL 2022. Who will open alongside Mayank Agarwal in the next edition remains to be seen. David Warner has been a prolific opener in IPL and he can make a great opening pair with Mayank Agarwal. Besides, he could also be the next captain of the Punjab Kings in the 2022 edition of the tournament.
Kolkata Knight Riders
Under the leadership of Eoin Morgan, Kolkata Knight Riders made a phenomenal comeback in the second leg of the IPL 2021 in UAE. KKR finished at number seven on the table after the end of the first half of the tournament. What followed was a remarkable turnaround that saw the franchise reach the final. KKR could have won the title had they not lost to CSK in the summit clash.
Ahead of the next edition, KKR have retained a list of four players. However, Eoin Morgan doesn’t find a place on the list. Besides, Shubman Gill has also been released by the franchise. Their four retained players are unlikely to lead the team and the franchise would thus be looking for a new skipper. David Warner could be someone on who KKR could place their bet.
The Australian could lead the franchise in the next edition of the tournament and also open the batting alongside Venkatesh Iyer.
