Former Australian batter Matthew Hayden was overawed with the way Chennai Super Kings (CSK) all-rounder, Moeen Ali played against the potent bowling attack of Rajasthan Royals (RR) on Friday.

In CSK’s final league game of the season, Moeen showcased his class and proved that he was worth retaining by smashing a 57-ball 93 studded with 13 fours and 3 sixes. He also took a wicket with the ball but CSK ended up falling short in the end.

However, the Englishman would be happy with his outing in the final game and will be hoping to carry it forward and perform for the national side.

It was complete dominance from Moeen Ali. He was hitting fours and sixes at will. Unbelievable, especially against Trent Boult who has been the premium bowler for Rajasthan Royals,” Hayden said about Moeen’s knock.

Moeen reached his 50 in just 19 balls but had to curb his aggression as wickets fell in heaps at the other end. Eventually, he fell just 7 runs short of his maiden IPL century.

At the toss on Friday, MS Dhoni had confirmed that he will be leading the CSK side in the next season as well. While the news was well-received among fans, Hayden felt it wasn’t the right call to make.

It is a really tough one. It depends on what the franchise expects. If you want a captain who has scored 200 runs this season at a strike rate of 128, then no problem. He has still got power in the hands, he still has those reflexes behind the stumps, he has still got that great running between the wickets.

He is also the most experienced captain in the entire IPL and has got those titles behind his name and that team behind him as well. But as they sit to rebuild and re-structure, how much of that is going to be MSD’s contribution,” Hayden added.
