IPL 2022 Final: Gujarat Titans (GT) Head Coach Ashish Nehra Scripts History, Becomes First Indian Head Coach To Win IPL Trophy

Former India National Cricket Team left-arm pacer Ashish Nehra, who was appointed as head coach of newcomers Gujarat Titans (GT) ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 tournament, has scripted history as he has become the first-ever Indian head coach to win an Indian Premier League (IPL) championship.

Ashish Nehra’s Gujarat Titans (GT) won against Rajasthan Royals by 7 wickets in the summit clash at the Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad on Sunday, May 29 to clinch the title in their first IPL season.

Notably, on May 29, six years ago, Nehra had also won the Indian Premier League (IPL) trophy as a player. He was part of the David Warner-led Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) squad that defeated Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) to win the crown.

Also, Ashish Nehra has joined the likes of Ricky Ponting and Shane Warne in the elite list to have won the marquee Indian Premier League tournament both as a player and head coach.

I’ve loved working with Ashish Nehra – Gary Kirsten

The duo of head coach Nehra and mentor Gary Kirsten did wonders for the Gujarat Titans in their debut season. After the title win, Kirsten said that he has loved working with Nehra and added that GT’s head coach is very strong tactically.

“I’ve loved working with Ashish, he’s really strong tactically – trying to put a game plan together on the fly is not easy. There are so many variables in each game, but what I’ve enjoyed has been the responsibility players have taken to win games for us,” Kirsten said.

Also, Australian wicketkeeper-batsman Matthew Wade, after the IPL 2022 final, said that Nehra made sure that there was a family-like atmosphere in the team.

“Just the team environment, relaxing environment, Hardik, Rashid were leading from the front. It was a family atmosphere, everyone felt welcome, Ashish [Nehra] ensured that. Here everyone gets net time, everyone gets a chance. It has been amazing, hopefully we can come back next year in front of these fans,” he said.
