Delhi Capitals (DC) should stick with Rishabh Pant as their captain as he has the potential to learn and improve himself, as per former Indian leg-spinner Piyush Chawla.

Pant had a forgettable outing in DC’s final game of the season against Mumbai Indians (MI) where he dropped a catch and also made tactical blunders. It ended up costing his side a place in the playoffs and RCB went through in fourth place.

Despite all the errors so far, Chawla opined that Pant should be persisted as he is still young and has more than enough time to learn and develop into a better skipper.

Pant is young and is still learning as a captain. Mistakes happen. Not only Rishabh Pant, (but) any captain can (also) make mistakes. He is one for the future and I am sure he will learn with time and experience. He is a street-smart cricketer, who will only improve as he keeps leading,” Chawla was quoted as saying in a chat with ESPNcricinfo.

“Don’t think captaincy had anything to do with his batting performance” – Piyush Chawla

Pant is naturally an aggressive player so the responsibility of captaincy might have taken a toll on his batting as well. However, Chawla doesn’t feel so and believes that the 24-year-old did show glimpses of his best self in cameos.

I don’t think captaincy impacts his batting in any way. If the ball is there to be hit, even if it is the first ball he is facing, he will go after it. I don’t think captaincy had anything to do with his batting performance in this IPL.

I wouldn’t even say that his form was bad. He was batting well and playing those impressive cameos, but couldn’t convert those into big knocks. I would like to see him leading Delhi again next year,” Chawla added.
