Abhishek Sharma, a SunRisers Hyderabad all-rounder, has no concerns about “eating the head” of Brian Lara, the team’s batting coach, and a childhood idol.
The youngster claims he hangs out with Lara throughout the team’s practice rounds, soaking up as much information as he can from the 53-year-old West Indian legend.
Lara is regarded as one of the best left-handed batters in sports history, with a worldwide fan base. His flair, mental strength, and capacity to execute under duress are some of the factors why the ‘Orange Army’ hired him to coach their batsmen ahead of the IPL 2022.
As a youngster, Abhishek Sharma remembers seeing the legend’s videos. The 21-year-old stated that this is his first time meeting Lara and that he does not want to miss out.
“(Has he learned anything from him?) Quite a bit. During practice, I spend most of my time with him. There is much to be learned from him. This is my first encounter with him. I’ve been watching his videos since I was a child. So now that I’ve gotten the chance to work with him, I’m eating his head!”
‘I’d been waiting for this opportunity: Abhishek Sharma
Abhishek Sharma, when asked about the basis for his recent success, said he drew comfort from his successes in his native state of Punjab and kept his mind on the chance.
“My only goal was to give it my all whenever I could enter for my squad. Because I had begun to play for my country and performed well. I had been looking forward to this occasion. I thought it was time to show myself after all of the support personnel, including Kane, backed me up.”
Abhishek Sharma made his mark in the Vinoo Mankad Trophy with a century on his Under-19 debut for Punjab. He helped India win the U-19 Asia Cup in 2016 and was a key member of the U19 World Cup in 2018.
