IPL 2022: I Think MS Dhoni's Decision Has Been Taken Keeping The Future In Mind – Danish Kaneria Feels Dhoni Wants To Groom Ravindra Jadeja As Future India Skipper

Former Pakistan cricketer Danish Kaneria has opined that legendary India and Chennai Super Kings captain MS Dhoni has handed over the CSK captaincy to Ravindra Jadeja keeping in mind the future of Indian cricket as he wants to groom Jadeja as future India National Cricket Team captain.

Just a couple of days before the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 MS Dhoni handed over the CSK captaincy to all-rounder Jadeja. However, Jadeja, as a captain of the Chennai Super Kings, lost his first match against Kolkata Knight Riders.

Meanwhile, Kaneria lauded MS Dhoni and labelled him as one of the best captains in world cricket. He added that India will have to think about spilt captaincy as there will be additional pressure on Rohit Sharma of leading India across three formats. Danish Kaneria said that only a few players have guaranteed spots in the Indian team and Jadeja is one of them, so India can look up to him as a future skipper.

 “We all know what kind of player Dhoni is. His decisions are always correct. I think he is one of the best captains in world cricket. He has won the 50-over World Cup, he has won the T20 World Cup, he has won the Champions Trophy and has won the IPL four times for Chennai Super Kings. Apart from this, there are many matches which India won due to Dhoni’s on-field decisions.

“So I think giving the captaincy to Jadeja is a far-reaching decision. Look, the Indian team is a balanced one and captaining it in all formats is not an easy task. Virat Kohli was very good, but he has left captaincy.

“Now, Rohit Sharma has to lead in all three formats. Whether one accepts this or not, captaining India in all formats of the game is a pressure job,” Kaneria told IANS in an exclusive interview.

“Today or tomorrow, India will have to think about split captaincy. Otherwise, Rohit will be under pressure, and it’s bound to happen. If we talk about the formation of the Indian team, only a few players are sure of their place in the team and Jadeja is one of them. In such a situation, I think Dhoni’s decision has been taken keeping the future in mind,” said Kaneria.

When asked about his favourite team in the IPL, Danish Kaneria replied that there are no favourites in the T20 format and he then went on to praise the marquee Indian Premier League (IPL).

“There are no favourites in the T20 format. But if we talk about the combination, Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians are good. There are two new teams in this edition, and you cannot take them lightly. IPL is a tournament in which all the cricketers want to play. You see, many players from South Africa took leave from their national side to play in the IPL. So this is turning out to be a big event every single year,” he said.

While comparing the Indian Premier League with Pakistan Super League, Danish Kaneria said:

“Being a very professional event, IPL is providing so many talents to Indian cricket. And it’s getting better and better with each passing season, while PSL (Pakistan Super League) is hardly doing anything for Pakistan cricket. If some player performs well in PSL, the unprofessional approach of Pakistan Cricket Board mars his chances of getting into the national side.”
