Former Indian player Wasim Jaffer said that a retained player in IPL has a different level of responsibility to play for their franchise.
A total of 27 players were retained by the eight old IPL teams during the IPL 2022 players’ retention list last year in November 2021.
IPL 2022: Yashasvi Jaiswal will open with Devdutt Padikkal for the Rajasthan Royals: Wasim Jaffer
Rajasthan Royals retained their skipper Sanju Samson, England’s swashbuckling player Jos Buttler and youngster Yashasvi Jaiswal ahead of IPL 2022 auction. Jaffer said he was surprised by Jaiswal’s retention. The former Punjab Kings batting coach also mentioned that Sunrisers Hyderabad duo of Abdul Samad and Umran Malik should take responsibility in pressure situations for the team.
“I was surprised that Yashasvi Jaiswal was retained so early. I think he will open with Devdutt Padikkal for the Rajasthan Royals. Jaiswal was dropped during the Ranji season, which was a setback of sorts for him. When you are a retained player, there is a different responsibility,” Jaffer told ESPNcricinfo.
“The same applies to Abdul Samad and Umran Malik from the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH). These players are unknown quantities, who haven’t tasted much IPL success. How they handle this pressure will be interesting to see,” he added.
Yashasvi Jaiswal made fifty against CSK in 21 balls in IPL 2021
Jaiswal garnered attention when he became the youngest player to score double hundred in List A cricket at the age of 17 and 292 days.
The prodigious Mumbai batter was the highest run-scorer in the ICC U19 World Cup 2020 with 400 runs in six innings, his scores read 88, 105*, 62, 57*, 29* & 59. Jaiswal’s batting talent earned him an IPL contract with Rajasthan Royals as the franchise bought for 2.40 crores in IPL 2020 auction.
In IPL 2020, Jaiswal played just three matches in his first season but went on to score 249 runs from 10 games in the second season and also scored his maiden half-century against Chennai Super Kings in just 21 balls.
Rajasthan Royals will play their first match against Sunrisers Hyderabad on March 29 at the Maharashtra Cricket Association (MCA) Stadium in Pune.
