Sunil Gavaskar has become a fan of Gujarat Titans (GT) batter Rahul Tewatia after his last over heroics against Punjab Kings (PBKS) during IPL 2022 match at the Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai. Tewatia slammed two sixes off the last two balls bowled by Odean Smith when 12 runs were needed and won the game for the Hardik Pandya-led side.

Tewatia scored an unbeaten 13 off 3 balls that included two sixes off the last two balls when 12 was required. Only MS Dhoni had achieved a similar feat in the IPL before.

Chasing 190 to win the match and keep their winning streak, Gujarat Titans were given a good start and foundation by Shubman Gill, who scored 96 in 56 balls with 11 fours and 1 six. Sai Sudharsan with 35 on his IPL debut and captain Hardik Pandya with 27 in 18 balls with 5 fours did their job as well.

But everything came down to 19 runs in the last over, bowled by Odean Smith. While the West Indian started off well and had the best chance to win the match for his team when 12 runs were required off the last two balls, Tewatia took him apart in his own style, scoring the required runs in a big-hitting fashion.

Sunil Gavaskar was highly impressed with the way the left-handed batter pulled off a miracle and termed Tewatia ‘iceman’ for keeping his cool and hitting Odean Smith for two consecutive sixes when 12 runs were required off 2 balls to take Gujarat to a six-wicket victory on Friday.

“What is running through his veins? It’s not blood. Ice! You (Matthew Hayden) are right, Ice. Rahul Tewatia should be nicknamed iceman.

“If there was anybody who was going to take Gujarat home, it was going to be Tewatia. It was in his arc. He likes to go outside the off stump and play that shot, we’ve seen him do that,” Gavaskar said on Star Sports.

The only other batter to achieve a win by hitting two sixes off the last two balls when 12 runs were needed, was MS Dhoni. Then playing for Rising Pune Supergiant, Dhoni smashed Axar Patel for consecutive sixes in the last two balls to win the match for his side.
